Yeah, maybe I just got into dm late (didn't start listening to it really til like 2010 - 2011) but this shit is really hard to deny. Definitely feels like they're taking old school sensibilities and repurposing them for today in a way that's exciting and fresh. Just great songwriting with this band too.

i hear you cotton, thats the exact same problem i have with most revival/nostalgia music. the bands all these artists are derivative of simply made better music than they do, so more often than not id just rather listen to like timeghoul or morbid angel instead of a record that does exactly what they do just not as good.
dont get me wrong, i really like this album and think it's one of the better examples of revival osdm in recent memory, but ill still listen to timeghoul waaaaay more than ill ever listen to this.

Good call on the example of timeghoul. Allthough I dig this concept more ngl. Timeghoul is definitely more impressive cause it was done in the 90s. I don t think this is exactly revival osdm tho.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I'd rather listen to these guys than post-Altars MA actually, so that's a good example. Bands are finding new ways of repurposing the old formula, yeah it's mostly not gonna be a total reinvention but it doesn't have to be, and the new flavours can be just as tasty as the old ones.

that’s insanity to me cause every one of their pre-2011 albums not named domination is better than altars. listen to formulas again, it’s at least 3 times better than this.
