Clearly a weaker Swans record but still surprised at the comparatively low rating. Some parts are outright reduntant but very enjoyable overall and noticeably ambitious as usual. With that said, I feel that The Glowing Man is also slightly underrated here. Such a hazy and emotionally powerful record. My spontaneous reaction to this album is that it's probably one of my favorite releases in 2019. I'm still only on my first listen though and I'm, truth be told, somewhat doubting its replay value a bit compared to preceding albums. We'll see.

My first listen was alright, but the second listen I felt there was almost nothing interesting in the record

Pretty sure this is the only Swans album I've liked so I assume that's why everyone hates it

Good review, you're right with many arguments presented, but I love the album anyway. You say your expectations went down during Hums, well I got hyped even more, because I've always liked the ambient and droning side of Swans, especially things like A Piece of the Sky, beginning of Kirsten Supine or whole Soundtracks. I agree that with this record, it got way more repetitive and it could bore many people (no massive crescendos and sound experiments like Soundtracks, most of the songs don't go anywhere), but I mostly enjoy the overall sound and atmosphere of this and I think both these aspects are very original.

Annaline is beautiful, What is This too, title track and The Nub are hypnothic, Sunfucker is awesome. There are some weaker tracks for sure, but for now I like it more than Glowing Man.

My Phantom Limb is so so so good. Excellent album front to back imo.
