great review sandwich, pos. given the length of this, and the lukewarm reception it's getting, i'm a little apprehensive to check this one out.

It's Angels of Light with the eerie, mantra-like atmosphere from the Glowing Man. It's a good album, but too long. 70 minutes would've been enough to get the gist of it.

Finally, a Swans album that's ok to give a low score to

Good review and I most agree, tho I actually like the idea of them emphasizing their ambient/drone and folk elements, but too much of this feels like a chore to listen to. It's coming it's real, t/t, and What is this? are my 3 favs.

I dunno, first two listens I had it at 3.0, third listen saw me bumping it to a 3.5. Still pales in comparison to The Seer, To Be Kind, and The Glowing Man, but I think that's part of the problem - this is a very different record than those three. And while direct comparisons are inevitable, they're without base (Gira himself deemed TGM the final record of "that era" of Swans or whatever). This is much more 'Angels of Light' blended with the earlier drone sensibilities of Swans (think Children of God with a much softer, effervescent edge; angelic instead of demonic, I guess).

I do agree it leaves something to be desired, but I'm still not sure how much of that is "real" vs. mere shock as a byproduct of shift in overall sound from the previous three (/four) albums.

The album's severely lacking in the dynamics department. It sounds like 2-minute songs inflated fivefold - the repeated sections bring nothing new and warrant no engagement from the listener. I found myself yawning at times when listening to some segments here.

My biggest issue here is the duration of the album.

I strongly envy people with the ability to appreciate the first Swans albums.

One of the reasons I like filth is because it has a purpose and doesn't drone on pointlessly for 2 hours

A strongly envy people with the time to listen to an entire Swans album in one sitting

Honestly, albums like The Seer and TBK are really easy to listen to in one sitting, provided you are capable of finding two hours to go uninterrupted by other shit.

this is better than what some seem to think, however, I think it’s vastly overshadowed by the last three albums and therefore feels disappointing in comparison. on its own merits its still great

Loved my first listen, I got lost in the gothy trance pretty easily. The Nub, My Phantom Limb, Amnesia and The Hanging Man are my first listen highlights.

whole album feels like one of those "[song] on repeat for 10 hours" videos.

With a little more dynamism this could be good music!
