--A few spins in and I'm going to be struggling to keep this relevant. Ray's vocals are great, but the instrumentation just isn't keeping me engaged.--
I think due to the nature of the music, it's definitely one that has to grow on you. How much it'll grow is the question.
--The issue is none of them live near each other and they're forced into playing the same shit over and over due to an inability to practice together. --
I've never thought about that before, but that makes perfect sense.
--Fates Warning is the last band I expect to see moshing and headbanging at the stage--
Look back at their old shows, even as recently as Parallels they were super energetic. They lost the energy about the same time it seemed like they lost their motivation (Inside Out). The motivation came back, but the energy never did.
--I mean, Still Life is the stuff of legends in my mind.--
Live Over Europe is a much better live album.

This was decent, thanks for reviewing it. I like his vocals but not enough to have an album centered around them and I still found myself preferring the tracks that trekked back into his rockier side. 'Lost', 'Shine', 'Wait', and the t/t were my favorites.

Standout track for me is definitely Crown Of Thorns, but with the musicians he had, I just wish they had done more or at least diversified a little.

Agreed Willie, Crown of Thorns was the only song I liked enough to actually add to one of my Spotify lists.

Yeah, this is pretty nice but nothing too special. Always enjoy his vocals but judging by this, Fates seems to bring out the best in him. Need to check out Redemption too.
About their live performances, sure, they're not the most energetic band, but they sounded great when I saw them two years ago and seemed to be having a good time as well.

" Just don't expect any prog."
Definitely okay with that.
I see a lot of old familiar faces on here. The usual suspects

Kj I still haven't heard the new Evergrey properly. Just can't get into it apart from Departure and a couple of others. Love Departure though

Yeah man it didn't resonate as strongly with me either, but I still enjoyed it a lot overall. "All I Have" is one of my absolute favorite Evergrey songs. So beautiful and powerful.

Ooof, I had thought that Tom did a nice job of getting them back on track for these past three albums. Departure is a certified beast. I'm looking forward to a new one

Agreed ray- especially on Hymns for me. Listened to that album for months straight and it's by far my favorite Evergrey album post In Search.
|

Hymns is great yeah. Wish they had some more complex riffs on it though. But that album probably has Tom's best performance overall for me

Titan. You are scaring me. I haven't checked this yet...

This has as much appeal to me as LaBrie's solo stuff. I like his solo stuff, but I just never reach for it.
With that, Slightly Out Of Reach is my favorite song by LaBrie.

LaBrie's solo albums are actually pretty dope. He's a way better singer and vocalist when he can dictate his own sound and style. Especially his first record...Marco Sfogli on guitar was ridiculous at times (the solo in "Drained" comes to mind). One of the few guitars players I'd call better than Petrucci.

he's not better than Petrucci.....but a great guitarist agreed
