Lots of great post metal out there, don’t listen to these dweebs (unless they’re telling you that.) Indeed (2).
I was fighting the good fight, for the record.

it is indeed No idea what I did differently this time around (unconsciously) that seemed to hit the sweet spot.

Sometimes things just click the way they should. It's up to you now to tweak on this formula until you're happy with your voice et al.
You say it's unconcious, I'd tentatively wager you found a natural voice you were most comfortable with. Add to that a respectable rate and excellent use of grammar and presto!

Had a 1 hour bus ride yesterday and threw this on. It's pretty well made but honestly, after 45 minutes I had to pause and look at what track I was on. My biggest problem with metal like this is everything just kind of bleeds together after a while. Really couldn't distinguish one track from the next. Also a lot of long, dull buildups - like the first 3 or 4 minutes of Lights on the Hill: where is the song? That intro doesn't need to be over 3 minutes long.
Gonna revisit the whole thing again but it's really exhausting to listen to for extended periods of time.

"Really couldn't distinguish one track from the next."
you're kidding right?
|
| |
No, not really. I mean there are distinguishing features but it's basically just different shades of grey

In Matt's defence, I've seen worse summaries from non-metal listeners who tackle albums not in the Avenged Sevenfold/Five Finger... brands of metal.
From the outside looking in post metal and CoL-core does have an essential bleeding factor which would be idiotic to overlook. He also mentioned (by assumption?) that this is a first listen - which would make sense that not all elements would naturally distinguish themselves from the next.

I listen to a lot of metal (stuff certainly infinitely harder than fucking avenged sevenfold lmao). I'm just very choosy with this stuff because I feel like there's an entire ocean of extremely samey, boring as hell metal. I like a little bit of variety in my metal

I think this is pretty varied for a post-metal album, mainly because it has distinguishable melodies instead of just chuggy climaxes

I don’t see what is even remotely close in sounding women it comes to The Silent Man, Lights On The Hill, We Feel The End and Inland Rain but ok.
