Great review! I'm enjoying it so far, but it's way too early for me to rate it after about 4 listens. It's a Tool album, this thing could take months to really find its place.

So far, from a purely musical perspective I would find it hard to understand how a historical fan of the band wouldn’t like this. Carey, Chancellor, Jones are delivering in a big way, there are some super complex rhythmic ideas here but they capture their trademark ability to harness those ideas into more natural feeling grooves.

'not really, at least that album was entertaining'
Eat the Elephant was as bad as the album cover suggested, well almost as bad, the cover was an abomination after all.
Looking forward to spinning this, not expecting anything ground-breaking but it should be interesting at least.

Obviously it's early, but my concern all along has been that Maynard would phone it in, which I think is partially borne out here. It's all too obvious that he records vocals off on his own. I think reviewers are being generous in their whole "he lets the music breathe" argument. Honestly, if I had to guess, I think he is probably just having trouble figuring out where to come in. And the lyrics are very on the nose. Kind of can't even listen to "Invincible." Sounds like writing from a country song.
Also, really not getting the hype on "7empest." It's a cool track but wouldn't really even make my top 15. My favorite parts of the album are the ones where Maynard sounds melodically invested, like Descending, and, especially, the intro to Culling Voices. It is certainly an achievement to release something of this magnitude and maturity at their age, but the emotional release and crescendo that makes listeners feel like part of something greater is mostly just gone.

I'm here for this ride. Didn't think I would be this hyped but that was naive of me.

Yeah it's the worst of their album arts.
Hopefully an alternative cover is released.

Yeah I do kind of hate the album art compared to Alex's previous work with these guys.
This is like a 3 for me right now, and that kills me. I think I just need to listen more. I've been listening for about a week now or whenever it first leaked, off and on, and it hasn't clicked yet, but I'm going to give it time.

I agree that he seems to be having trouble harnessing these rhythms and song structures into something he can build strong vocal melodies around. But there are lots of obvious moments that would benefit from big vocal climaxes in the first half and he’s conspicuously absent in most of them.
