I wouldn't bet on that one as I have no clear idea or gut feeling, but what I tend to find is if an artist goes on to release two albums people prefer then all bets are off, surprising shit gets forgotten, esp in hip hop/r n' b/pop

It may end the year top of that chart but could see it taking a plunge in five years for sure. Possibly a little too 'of the moment' to be one for the ages - that's certainly what the sputulace have decided based on the top 200 chart no show (by the end of the year)

This album will be alright because it sucks from the hip hop canon teat - it's fine all round, just don't ask for anything that could be labelled a surprise

Perhaps I feel more disconnected because I found his 2017 record much more personal in its lyrical dealings. I of course understand the drug aspect is rather central to his identity as an MC but I think it got to be a bit tiresome here. To each their own.

In terms of whether this will remain influential or not, I'll say the same thing as I did for Kacey Musgraves: in this go-go modern age we're in, it's very difficult to determine who will somehow manage to retain a semblance of dominance in the collective conscious. Few artists have managed that, so it's no slight on the music necessarily. It's all up to time and chance, really.

Tyler, Freddie - both have released ok albums this year that have been critical darlings :/

I'd rather listen to the Billy Woods than either of them but hey, if there's ever a genre to cater for individual preferences it's hip hop so I sort of get the acclaim for both

Neither quite hits the spot for me

I was thinking mainly about how in the rush to acclaim each most recent album the greatest then once an album is supplanted by two new 'greatest' albums by the same artist then it can result a bit in egg on face - a mixture of overexcitement and then finding an album's genuine ranking among that artist's eventual discog.

Or you might just end up with three Tyler the Creator albums topping the critics lists for three separate years and that's when I'd need to do a lot of soul searching

Which is also a very very real thing.

Listening to this again now - def a 3.5 for me, I know it's old school and keeps to the established 'hip hop with a smattering of soul' rulebook...still classy
