man...It's really hard to pick a fave (and that means something) but I go with the opener, since everyone is playing the unobvious X)...but yeah...Blue Crystal, Trees and Closer are top tier for faves...

The opener is perfect. It's either that, Blue Crystal or Silver Trees for me.

Gave this another start-to-finish listen while walking my kid around our neighborhood in his stroller (finally had a warm, overcast day that wasn't a million degrees out).
Hadn't touched this in about two weeks and was worried I got too trigger happy with that 5/5 but nope. This thing is absolutely *impeccable*. I literally cannot point to anything on this album and consciously call it a flaw.

The kid was still OK at the end of it?
I owe this a bump

Hah, surprisingly yes. Ever since he was about 6 months old, he loves the outdoors. He will be nonstop crying in the house and as soon as we walk outside, he goes silent. I think he likes the scenery. And it gives mom & dad some extra time with him, not to mention a grip on our own sanity :o)

That opening track is stunning. Like SOTY material on first listen. Excited to see where the rest of this takes me

First listen blew me away. Wow. I love that you can always tell it’s jazz, no matter how far they stray from that original. It’s such a whirlwind will really strong roots. Can already tell it’ll be great late night study music

That bit in ‘Silver Trees’ around or just after 3:15 (before the vocal kicks in) is heavenly.

If this is something I keep returning to, I could see a five happening. Everything about it is blowing me away.

Yeah, I 4.5’d it at first but after a few more listens decided I legitimately couldn’t find any flaws. I love every second of it.

Dewi, what’s your front runner for the year, this or Two People? (Or something else?)

"I love every second of it." I dont but I accept it. I m not used to free jazz but the texture work is more than interesting at least. All actual songs are massive jams though.

'I'm not used to free jazz but the texture work is more than interesting at least. All actual songs are massive jams though.'
I feel that way about a few of Fire! Orchestra's earlier albums. Each of them have segments that are absolutely mind-blowing, while occasionally the free-jazz and shapeless wailing segments feel out of place, or go on for a bit too long, etc. This is the first time I think they balanced out the jazz, orchestral, and (I'll say) "rock" elements perfectly.

Two People and this for sure. But I have some other runners. Devil Master, Oohashi, and a lot more that I have to go over a few more times, plus stuff to be released (Chelsea Wolfe, Emma Ruth w/ Thou, Cult of Luna, Temples...) . It's been an incredible year so far and I have the feeling it's gonna go out with a bang.
