Well, under a certain definition the interludes are arguably not “songs” ;-P

lol ok yes but you see my point? pretty wild that a band can take away catchy choruses and a man singing all the words and suddenly they're not making songs. we're a step away from the all-time headscratcher of "this isn't music" criticism that gets passed around a lot on this site. never at any point will I be convinced this is good or constructive music critique, personally

'"It just hasn't got any songs on it, not really."

this isn't a real criticism of music, not really'

If a band who've released a hundred songs before then release a new album and none of the tracklist would rank among their top 50 or 60 best songs...then, for me, the critique is there just aren't really any 'songs' on it.

You know, no 'keepers', no 'classics' - nothing worth getting out of bed over. None of yer proper boys.

Oblivions is probably my favourite National song since High Violet

yikes, they should have wheeled out the duets ten years earlier huh

I find it hard to believe an invested National fan could reach that conclusion but hey, we're all different and it proves there's a National song for everyone :/

Oblivions is a beaut, I'm puzzled how that one doesn't do it for ya, doof. The "It's like a tide in a city lifts me and carries me around" part is one of the best moments since TWFM.

It’s top 7 here but a 3 out of 5 sorta level for me - not big on the prominent female vox in that one, and the arrangement isn’t perfect either

Yeah “Oblivions” was an early highlight but hasn’t really held up to me.

it's quite muted but idk it's got that magic. would be interested to find out how it's arranged. basically had it on repeat for 2 days

Looks like this is yet another band I need to check out. Since I joined sputnik, I’ve discovered and gone through the discogs of Thrice, Brand New, Modest Mouse and currently on Manchester Orchestra. Loved them all.

These guys up that alley re those bands?

Abso-fuckin-lutely. These area different kind of Sputcore though, not emo/post-hardcore indie like those but rather sad dad indie, i.e. the best kind! :D

I’ll probably just start with the first and go chronologically. That’s been working out for me so far.
