It's Rowan trying to wind me up

The female vocals on this are meh though - but more because they don't mesh in an interesting way with Matt than anything else really

'Where is Her Head' is one of my favourite tracks on this and that's the most 'fem' so maybe that saves me - it doesn't really sound like The National but it's an ok tune and the vocals are nice enough

The female vocals are lovely. This is just over-saturated with them from what I remember. It's time for me to listen again....

Do people actually like Not in Kansas? I still think this website is running an elaborate joke with that one. Apart from the godawful interludes, it's the worst thing here.

Yeah Not in Kansas is easily the worst here, the lyrics are pretty good but musically the verses are just eh and the chorus grinds everything to a halt just to not really do anything interesting

Most of the interludes, Hey Rosey, The Pull of You, and Not in Kansas are the pretty obvious weak points. If those were made bonus tracks and the rest of the songs rearranged, this could be like 8.5 out of 10.

Almost totally agree with Talons except I'd drop "So Far So Fast" instead of Kansas. Honestly if that were the album it'd be a solid 4.5 for me and not too far below the preceding five albums. Bloat really is the only major issue here.

I actually sort of like the first 4 tracks on the debut. I can't think of anything here which doesn't have some fatal flaw. And this album has "Not in Kansas" which is actively revolting.

Debut gets a bit of a bad rap, treated on its own merits, without the baggage of being a National album, it's a perfectly serviceable summery country-tinged indie rock album (especially those first 4-5 tracks which I like a lot), but outside of times when that kind of things is what I'm in the mood for, I'd take this over that easily.
