damn homie I just wanted to insult doof and you took this so personal lol
it is kinda weird cos almost every other site was fairly positive on this album and if you only used sputnik you'd think this was universally reviled lol but that's a classic story rly
SWB p much has all the flaws this is supposed to have from my perspective, whaddyagonnado

I feel like just because people overuse the term “strawman” on reddit and shit doesn’t mean there aren’t valid times to say it. We can’t give them that much power Rowan

Not many bands go out on a high
The Berninger solo was ok though, nothing outstanding but it being half decent was more evidence that the varying tastes and directions of the band members might be working against each other at this stage
That started on SWB with the nonsense unearned EPIC climaxes to half the songs but at this point they’re all over the shop
All the production choices and arrangements no longer seem to be for the service of the song, just chin stroke fluff

Loved So Little is such an amazing tune, I enjoyed Serpentine Prison as a good solo album but that track can go toe to toe with the best National songs for me.

The fact people thought ‘I’ll Destroy You’ was a classic National song means I totally understand this album being liked/loved by some.
Most boring song I’ve seen them play live, was like someone fired a ‘toilet break’ starting gun. Most of this album live would also bomb I’m certain of it.
The sad thing being catching The National on tour for ‘Trouble’ was my favourite gig of all time. ‘SWB’ show I caught just a few years later was nowhere near as good, they’d lost it a bit.

They played 7 tracks from this when I saw them.
Hey Rosey, the title track, Light Years, Oblivions, Rylan, Where is Her Head and You Had Your Soul With You.
They all sounded brill in a live setting

I read all these comments and I'm wondering how every one of you doubts this band is capable of dropping a classic. They've experimented a little after dropping 4 classics in a row, they're entitled to try some new stuff even if not all of it sticks.
Also, suggesting this album gets low ratings because it has women guest vocalists is either a wind up or a ridiculously bad take.

I could see how I'll Destroy You could fail to be a hit live but it's definitely a classic National track.
