Where Is Her Head is one of their best songs and I will die on that hill

The two songs that sound like outcasts from TWFM

Yep. I like 'Oblivions', 'Light Years', and 'Where Is Her Head' enough, but 'Quiet Light' and 'Rylan' are a solid step or two above those, even, and as you said, could easily bump shoulders with the likes of TWFM's tracklist.

I agree Rylan is, but both Rylan and Quiet Light sound like cookie cutter National songs, whereas Where Is Her Head is a bit of a different sound and really emotional

I mean at the end of the day, I still really like this album. A lot. It's just that The National have (to my mind) released four albums of greatly superior strength, and at least two more of similar (but likely slightly higher) quality.
Only track I don't care for at all here is the opener, and 'Dust Swirls' is also pretty meh.

Like why is it so fucking long too, should have cut off 20 mins

Not in Kansas is awesome and has become one of my favourite national songs. Rylan, where is her head and light years are cool too. Everything else i am not into

"Rylan", "Quiet Light", and "Light Years" are all 5/5 songs, and I honestly enjoy almost all the rest of this. Still bats lower than every other album since the debut but at this point I can't even call this a disappointment.

Agreed. It's a little disappointing for me given how strong they've always been, but generally a great album yea

I've said it before but if you cut out the weak bits (the interludes obv, "Dust Swirls" included, as well as "The Pull of You", "Hey Rosey", and maybe "So Far So Fast") you're left with an easy 4.5 that's of relatively comparable length to previous albums. The only sin here really was bloat (and sequencing a bit), if they'd not gotten caught up in the film score style stuff of the interludes and had relegated few songs to B-sides I would have no complaints. Only The National could have a disappointing album this good, if anything it almost acts to reinforce just how good they are.

So Far So Fast is the best song by far

So Far So Fast is the best song on here though. I'd say Not in Kansas could be cut instead. Dust Swirls is wonderful after the first minute. Roman Holiday and Had Your Soul aren't perfect either.
So there's a lot keeping this from being a classic like lots of their others, but there are like 8 really great songs overall, so I can't see it being lower than 7/10.

I like "So Far So Fast" well enough, it's very pretty but that's about all. I'm not mad at it being here, just not sure it adds anything in particular and as is it doesn't fit the flow at all.
