Yeah I do like a few songs. Gave it one more listen and bumped to a 3. There are some good songs here.

I would add the t/t, So Far So Fast, and Light Years (mainly for that instrumental bridge). This is basically a 3.5 for me, but I can't bring myself to rate a National album that low.

"I have no idea where they're gonna go next though; wouldn't be surprised if they go on a long hiatus, or call it quits altogether after this tour."
I've seen a few interviews that suggest the band has a number of "rock tracks" that they tossed out because it didn't fit the aesthetic of this record. It wouldn't surprise me if they turned around after this tour and release another record with those tracks around 2021/2022.
And then, I'm inclined to agree with you. It's likely that would be the end of a road.

Quiet Light really shows why Matt is the fucking boss. As much I appreciate what they tried here with the guest vocalists, I would have loved to hear Matt sing some of the lyrics here.

Ugh. Not only does this band still bore they to tears, they took 16 tracks to do it in.

Boring is a stretch, but they aren't for ~everyone~

Agreed that this album is overlong and pretty boring at times, but every other album is great barring their debut.

This will grow on you. Give it time. I'm getting into a different song with every spin. As usual with this guys, it's a grower. People gave up on this one too quickly

I partially agree ben, there's certainly a good amount to appreciate here, but even after 10+ listens since its release I can't say I really care about like 30% of this. A very good album but their weakest since the debut I'm thinking.
Also the music video version of Hairpin Turns is different and better than the album version btw, there's more piano and the percussion is a bit different.

Specific, yet bizarrely accurate.

If you listen to it on it's own, without the memory of what you like about them, it's not a bad piece of music.

It's not actually as boring as I was expecting. It's overlong, and the beginning of the album doesn't do them any favors in terms of capturing people's interest, but there's some better stuff in the middle and the back.

It really is a decent album, but half of it veers into “not my type of music/genre”.
