Didn’t you start with this album? If so, it makes a bit more sense. I started with Alligator and his voice was quite distinct so it took some adjusting. But once I got used to it, it’s pure honey baby. Love his lyricism also.
So imagine going thru the whole discog loving his voice...only to end on this. Maybe I just need to adjust to this in and of itself.

I started with Sleep Well, then did this, and then I've been working my way back

'I love the lack of Matt'

Matt is the head of the dragon. They really can't be "The National" without him. The guest vocalists are all nice, but not so much that Matt is missing for half the song....

Matt is slowing down...but to me that says stop the band, or take a hell of a long time between albums (think a Moon Shaped length of time)
It doesn’t say ‘the show must go on, wheel on the supporting cast!’

“Yeah man it was always our dream at the start to work with twenty backing vocalists and a symphony orchestra one day...” sort of deal

Yea, I'd rather them stop than continue down the route of putting Matt on the wayside.

I love Matt but keeping their classics in mind, it becomes obvious that on here his melodies and lyrics have declined a decent amount. Like Roman Holiday, the verses of Hairpin Turns, The Pull of You, Not in Kansas... I'm not saying they're all bad, but the vocal melodies are just flatter and less emotive than they used to be.

Yeah this doesn’t really feel completely like an “official” National album to me. Feels like some kind of off shoot, a spin off of sorts.

Yeah but all that being said, this is still a really solid release. Like it isn't their Everything Now (by Arcade Fire) or anything. There're around 7 or 8 songs that are excellent imo, and a couple others that I enjoy a decent amount.
I have no idea where they're gonna go next though; wouldn't be surprised if they go on a long hiatus, or call it quits altogether after this tour. I think the Dessner brothers (who write almost all the music) clearly want to pursue other stuff, like soundtracks and collabs. Matt probably wants to take a vacation haha

I def need to sit with it a few more times.
That’s partly why I grabbed a ticket to see them at the Greek Theater in September— could be awhile before I get another chance.

What I've realized about this album is that I can listen to about 3 songs from it at any time and love them all, but when I try to sit through the whole thing front to back, it annoys me. Not sure why.

I still love Quiet Light, Oblivions, Where Is Her Head, and Rylan. The rest can be wiped from existence and I wouldn't be too sad.
