wtf SWB is better than this.
The band's two worst albums have the word "find" in them. Coincidence? I think not.

Psssshhhh Trouble Will Find Me is actually their best album imo.

Does anyone know if this sold well, especially first week? Curious to know considering TWFM and HV were #3 on the Billboards, then SWB topped them and charted #2. Something tells me this didn’t do nearly as well and I’m wondering why.

So far, I’m really not liking the lack of Matt here. If I’m listening to The National, I wanna hear Matt singing damnit! Not these guest vocalists, none of whom I’m a big fan of so far. I didn’t realize they were gonna be THIS prevalent.
It’s a shame because (most) of the songs are pretty damn good, but Matt not singing all/most of the lyrics/songs makes it feel like a real squandered opportunity. Why the hell did they think that was a good idea?
I’m only halfway thru and maybe it’ll grow, but I am not liking Matt’s absence so far.

Lol all of the female guest vocals are provided by some of the best in the biz, I have no complaints there. I understand missing Matt's voice tho, I think we all would've liked a little more on his end.

Interestingly, I don't have much of a problem with the guest vocalists. More Matt def would have been nice but it's not a deal-breaker. I just don't think many of these songs are all that great compositionally. The National has always had a lovable "boring" approach but this is often boring in all the wrong ways. They don't sound like themselves.

I’m gonna listen a few times with an open mind. Despite my critiques, I feel this settling on a 3.5 in the end. We shall see.

So Far So Fast is really good. Probably my favorite after the first initial listen — but obviously, being that this is The National after all, that’s liable to change.

Yeah man I was rocking Alligator today as well. So many of their best songs on it.

There needs to be more Matt for sure. So Far So Fast is my favorite I think, it's a little plodding but I find it gorgeous.

I actually hate that I have no idea which track you're talking about and I've had at least half a dozen listens to this

Aye I had to actually listen to it to remember. Wouldn't have known I'd heard that song before, but now I know. this really is just so disappointing.

you know what really hurts?
we can't even say 'National albums...y'know, they're always growers'
the last time something shrivelled on me this much was when they took a swab from me down the sex clinic

Part of me doesn’t even want to listen to this again tbh lol. It’s not awful, I just felt completely unstirred by it. Kinda bored me. I want to like it but I’m tempted to move on and just go ahead and dive into Frightened Rabbits’ discog.

Didn’t really grip me on first listen, but that’s happened with many National songs I’ve grown to love. I’ll definitely give it a few more listens as I could end up loving it. I guess the lack of Matt and it being overlong are what make another listen feel more like a chore.

I love the lack of Matt, his voice is still my least favorite thing about them tbh
