So last night's show was killer, maybe not quite as transcendent from front-to-back as I would've hoped for a band of the National's caliber (though the best moments were absolutely jaw-dropping) but still a solid 8/10 concert and that's more than enough to earn my praises.
"The Pull of You" was the best song from this album in a live setting methinks. The passion during the "talk it out in a car with rain falling around us" part was felt throughout the rest of the song as well (culminating in Matt screaming the last verse), which I feel the studio version struggles with a bit.
Conversely "Quiet Light" is one of my top 2 favorite tracks on this album along with "Hairpin Turns" - the former was a relative flop live, and the latter didn't get played at all :/

How come Quiet Light fell flat ? Agree that it’s a stunner on here, but the live clips I heard a year ago when they started playing it didn’t sound too special.

Glad it was a good one Dyl
Sounds like you had a similar experience to me watching them support SWB - it wasn’t wall to wall bangers, a few newer songs fell short

@dustandnations: The strings in the last minute of the studio version of "Quiet Light" are a massive part of why I consider it an album highlight - they were absent live, and the guitar effects used to mimic the strings weren't enough to compensate imo.
@Doof: Yeah, the weaker songs live (relatively speaking ofc, nothing I'd rate below maybe a 2.5/5 at worst) were almost universally from the new album... and IAETF did saturate the setlist (10 out of 22 songs is a bit much imo, even for a tour in support of that album).
That being said - "The Pull of You," "Fake Empire," "Terrible Love," "Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks," and others were phenomenal live. Might make a list later about the show

Definitely a grower. Not as good as their previous 3 albums, but kudos to them for expanding their sound

the enjambment in Mina's verses of Oblivions is so fucking tight and well done. Berninger is still the man

Just saw them in Chicago. The setlist was absolute trash (they played 11 songs off this), but it was redeemed in the end as Matt went into the crowd during Terrible Love, and was right next to me and my buddy, who got to sing into the microphone.

@BigHans you just geeked me out hard. I saw them in Chicago at Riot Fest in 2014. 90% of their set was from TWFM and I was bummed, but Matt ran out for Terrible Love and I hunted his ass down and mauled him as soon as he popped out. Finished the song and crowd surfed him back up. Shook forever after cuz they're my favorite band ever lmao

"90% of their set was from TWFM and I was bummed"
That's pretty much exactly what I'd want, haha.

Dont get me wrong it's an awesome album, just doesn't make for the most engaging setlist for normies like the friends that I was with haha. I'm weird in that I enjoy music much more if the people around me are enjoying it too.
