Though 'You Can Make Him Like You' is an absolute classic tune from The Hold Steady.
^ There's always other boys there's always other boyfriends.

Stay Positive has some absolutely monstrous tracks. Constructive Summer, Magazines, Title track, Sequestered in Memphis, Lord I'm Discouraged (God that guitar solo)

I massively prefer 'Boy and Girls in America' but they're the two Hold Steady albums I know really well. The one after was a bit ropey and I've only given Separation Sunday a few goes over the years.

I think Finn is better doing the understated storytelling, esp the subtle weepies - he never really convincingly 'rocks', it's always a bit ironic and knowing when he does it.
^ Doof, can you imagine anyone other than Finn pulling off a song like "Stuck Between Stations," which absolutely rocks? Who else can weave Sal Paradise, strippers who are kissers but horrible girlfriends, the Minnesota Golden Gophers, the Devil and John Berryman together and make it work?
Who else can say a line like "I've surrounded myself with doctors and deep thinkers, but big heads and soft bodies make for lousy lovers" amid a monster guitar riff and flourishing piano and pull it off?

^Boys and Girls is my favorite also. One of my top 5 favorite albums. They definitely went downhill after that one, although every subsequent album has about 2-4 watershed tunes.

Hold Steady and Gaslight Anthem two bands of the same era who sailed in on a sea of hype and despite some great stuff I’ve never been able to get passed how contrived it comes across.

lol Zak it probably shouldn't surprise you that Boys and Girls and America and The '59 Sound are both in my top 20 all time albums. '59 Sound is such a quintessential 'MERICA album without being redneck. Its Americana nostalgia done right. Young Bruce Springsteen set to melodic punky hooks

Agreed Zak, Finn is allowed to be clever here without quite so many winks towards the audience because he's no longer singing over an AC/DC-alike riff
Saying that they were still very good a lot of the time.

But but but Doof, you're forgetting that AC/DC is absolutely the best band ever.
Lol, I think we might just like different things. I am a sucker for the rawk.

For me the quintessential proper modern American rock band is drive by truckers.
Hans, what do you reckon to Springsteens new tune? I think it’s fucking amazing.

Hans, I like the Hold Steady stuff don't get me wrong, it's a bit clever clever contrived as Zak said - it's more that I just prefer this solo stuff.
But then I really like alt country, indie folk - your Richmond Fontaines, Mark Eitzels - that sort of sound backing those witty storyteller types.

I know I hijacked this thread with my Hold Steady fanboyism. This particular record here is actually perfect for where Finn is in his life right now. He started losing his "rock-out" fastball somewhere around 2012, so it makes sense he is taking this direction now. I guess I just pine for the days. That said, I saw The Hold Steady in Minneapolis last fall and it was one of the greatest moments of my life. Finn came to rock. Everyone in the crowd knew every word.

^ lol, Im also a massive DBT fanboy. I saw them with the Hold Steady in Minneapolis in 2008, back when both were still in top form.
