Preach

Ugh page break... boys be singing about being depressed and awkward like they're singing about love and it's just as trite

I mean I totally get not liking the singer, as he is super on the border of being over the top (he just toes that line perfectly for me). But I do think it’s slightly unfair to say he doesn’t have something to be sad about it. I mean mental illness like anxiety or depression might not be as unique of a topic to sing about nowadays, but that doesn’t make it any less valid.

Guess I can’t argue that! Different strokes for different folks. One of the beautiful things about music.

whether he has things to be sad about or not isnt the point. everyone has things to be sad about. i myself have experienced mental illness. i still think he's annoyingly whiny and one-note and self-pitying. some "poor me" bitching is okay, but it needs to be balanced with some other things, or at least wrapped up in obscurity and metaphors to some degree so that it can be interpreted in different ways, otherwise it can become obnoxious. of course if he wrote better lyrics these flaws wouldnt seem so bad, but theyre really basic and not very interesting.

I dug the musicianship on this but it feels like an emo product without any actual emotional honesty. but yeah Cheers plenty of folks find nothing of value in some of my favorite tunes

im kind of tired of these wannabe bands who want to be like their favorite emo band and be s00per high emotion and honest and heartfelt, but it just comes off as forced. "omg things are so emotional right now i have to put my hands on my head, and lets get a shot of the whole band sitting there looking depressed just in case they didnt get how SERIOUS and SAD our music is." this band is almost a satire of this ilk of emo.

It’s always interesting the ways things resonate with people, cause I actually agree with what most of you guys are saying, but a lot of those reasons are why I enjoy this so much. It might just because I’m pretty fairly recently into emo music like this, so I’m not as familiar with the sound. I kind of enjoy that it’s not all wrapped up in metaphor. Just some guys talking about how they are and that it kind of fucking sucks, but oh well that’s life sometimes. It’s refreshing for me, but I totally get why I coild be the minority for that. I think the last two tracks serve as enough closure for me to not just feel like it’s sad with nothing else going for it.

it doesnt need to be wrapped up in metaphor, that was just one path he could have taken to improve his lyrics if he was insistent in being a whiny bitch for the whole album. for his straightforward approach, he could have added a little humor (dark humor, even), changed up perspectives, shown some self-awareness...anything. "but oh well that’s life sometimes." even a little bit of this would have helped, but the problem is that i didnt detect any sort of "oh well thats life" sentiment. it was just whining for a whole album.

Hey you wrote a good review that exposed this group to a lot of people that like it. I have just fell in love like bands like mccafferty and wicca phase Springs eternal and it made me think I like this stuff. I try other things in the genre and it all just rings hollow.

Again, all totally fair! I said earlier that I can definitely see the lyrics wearing off of me as I listen to this more, basically because of the reasons you stated. With the straightforwardness of them, there’s not much to uncover on deeper listens. What you hear is what you get, but that can wear a little. I’m curious to see how this stands for me over the tests of times. I have a feeling I’ll be somewhere in the middle between where you guys are and where I am right now.

And yeah, emo is one of those weird genres for me where sometimes everything clicks into place for me and then sometimes I just can’t connect. And if you can’t connect to an emo record, it’s hard for it to serve it’s purpose.

For some reason I didn't vibe with Hot Mulligan's debut much the first time I checked it out, but have enjoyed it a whole lot more since returning to it! Adds to the twinkly sad boi music mood I've been into for whatever reason

^That and the opener are the songs that make me most excited for their future! I think the potential is huge.

If I'm being honest with myself this is definitely not a 5 and I'll bump it down at some point, but damn it still emotionally hits me in the gut enough that I'll keep it there for a little bit longer.
