what if this review was a secret ruse to ward off contrarians preemptively and help boost this to a 3.8 site avg
(it isn't because I'm not that smart)

I'm just tired of handing out 3.5's to albums that don't impress me because I think the album, or artist, is supposed to be good. This did very little for me but I'm glad it's still getting a positive reception because I really like Mattson.

right i think you justify it well i just never thought i'd see a TMOE review with a 2.8 at the top

yeah I definitely did a double take too, lol. was expecting a Sowing 4.3+ review, but agreed the points are justified well

Alright, the euphoric first listen has passed and this has settled into a decent 3.5. I gotta admit, as much as it pains me because I was so looking forward to this, but Sowing is pretty much on the ball here. I do love this sound but, ugh, the rest just doesn't live up to The Running Styles.

The atmosphere is gorgeous but no denying that it’s pretty by-the-numbers for him. Anyone else hear Revelation Blues in the riff on “What I’ve Been Kicking Around”?

I agree with the review to a certain extent, I also thought Dark Bird was really great (prolly his second best) and I'm somewhat disappointed with the creative direction he took on this album. The opener especially is gorgeous. AFter the first spin I like it way better than I ever liked There's no Leaving now.
But then again... the songs are so fucking good. And he has really developed as a vocalist.

Cool to see you sort of agree Lucman/dust/Rad, although I hope I didn't put a damper on anyone's enjoyment of this. He's a phenomenal artist, I just think he's capable of wowing us rather than settling for "building an empire" or whatever they call it when a popular artist refines his craft into oblivion instead of branching out.

I think if anything the pure splendor of the Glen Hansard record kinda put this in a poorer light. I also think having The Big Freeze, which has a similar stripped back and depressing vibe, makes this seem a tad redundant. It's no fault of the artist, just bad timing I suppose.

He probably just released this album to have new material for a tour. I know it's unromantic to say but we don't have to treat every album like an artistic revelation. Dude's gotta pay the bills.

I think the cover art is him whispering that to some invisible entity.

I was sorta thinking the same thing. Maybe he's trying to grow his audience with this one. I know the venue he's playing here this year is twice the size of theatres he's played in past.

Super review. I don't know, though, this feels like his most personal album yet. It doesn't at all sound like a re-tread to me. I think it's a far simpler album than Shallow Grave or Wild Hunt, seems like he's toning things down for the sake of wringing as much emotion out of as simple a group of compositions as he can. Everything feels so seamless, almost like he's passively giving into the music. I find something very beautiful and also very impressive about that.

i don't rlly have any problems with that assumption in general but in the specific context of kristian's career this one feels more significant than "just another album". seems like the first time in years that he's felt inspired enuf to make a real album as opposed to another half measure like the light in demos or when the bird sees the solid ground. so if we're to impose a contextual narrative here, it feels like this album should be the cumulative product of several years worth of development and build-up.
obviously that's all just projection so the motivation could rlly just be "i need some new material for touring". but i'm hesitant to adopt that viewpoint with kristian (absent more info), whereas i'm more readily able to do so for artists who put out albums every year, japanese hobby bands, or legacy artists who've been playing the same set for the past decade.

doesn't feel like just another album to me either, it feels a lot more inspired than the non-album singles he been dripping this past year.
