There’s a lot of amazing blackgaze bands.

Indeed, this is one of the better ones though. And indeed now that you mention it that middle part does sound a little Type-O-y. Nice :D

This comes out to me many times as if Deftones and Gojira had a blackgaze child, but I'm sure everyone would find their own vibes from this, across many genres, from punk rock to osdm. This is actually the first blackgaze album I 5.

surprised this is rated higher than their last one, doesn’t sound any better to me

both are good, I just miss some of the rawness from Home

Home was more raw and emotional for sure. I enjoy the groovyness of this more I guess.

i liked this more than expected - i think these guys have a habit of switching ideas up when they don't need to just when i was getting into a section or idea, and some of their tracks just feel like they're constantly building to nothing meaning some of the tracks feel a little anticlimactic but there's no denying that when these guys hit their stride they're fucking sick. the guitar work is far more interesting on this record and it really works. tremendous improvement from the last album and a very high 3.5.

Only just finished Portrait of Pieces but this is rad so far. If the rest is this good I’ll definitely be picking this up on vinyl

"they're constantly building to nothing" what?! Nah...that s an issue with the genre but not this album imo.

@wildcard get ready for Horizon then m/

completely disagree. regret and coma suffer the worst from this - they build tension for the entirety of the track and then just cut out.

Two awesome tracks...and they switch ideas because they actually do some brilliant songwriting, providing mood changing in the track and along the album, instead of a constant crescendo towards the end and stiff mood.

But maybe you have a point here and there cause this leaves me wanting more.

don't get me wrong, i do like the tracks, coma especially - but it's that building of tension, constant building and anti-climactic finishing that i hope that the band learns from because they have a GREAT sound here.

Oh I think get what you mean on coma f.e....try to think of it like trantric sex "don't cum yet, lets eat some dinner now..." Lol

Idk man I just think is pretty cool, on a genre where the whole seems to count more than a song, or the crescendo to clímax became a formula, to have tracks like horizon f.e. with an actual chorus yk...and still all tracks have their connections.

Pretty bored with bringing up Deafheaven over and over again. Can we use tantric sex comparisons from now on instead?

Sounds like a great idea Laen, next time I'm tempted to use the name Deafheaven in a review, I'll replace it with trantric sex okay?

If this is not as bad as Ghost Bath, I'll check it out I guess

I find this to be a hell of a lot better than Ghost Bath, but I guess that depends on your preferences. Listen to the intro and the first song, if it's not to your liking than I don't think you'd like the rest.
