I'd argue that if an interview describing what inspired the song is necessary background to provoke an emotional reaction it's not a very effective song to begin with.

The bangers on this are straight fire through. I can't get Sibling Rivalry out of my head to save my life.

"I'd argue that if an interview describing what inspired the song is necessary background to provoke an emotional reaction it's not a very effective song to begin with."

I mean, context changes everything. Knowing that a song is based on a real person/event can definitely add a layer of depth. For example, the level emotion towards Limousine (Brand New) is multiplied by about a thousand when Jesse told everyone that it's about a massively deadly car wreck where a mother sat on the side of the road holding her daughter's severed head in her arms.

it's that fine line between sharing enough and sharing too much for your audience to get the full picture. I don't think there's a definitive "right" way to go about it and as an artist/lyricist myself I definitely understand the urge to fully explain yourself post-lyrics in some way. but my guitarist always argued his favorite lyrics of mine were the ones that needed no further explanation...

Nice Con, I checked a couple songs from each of those projects. While APC and WNoA didn’t click with me personally, Kilometer Davis was legit good and X-con was good fun in its own right. You do vocals for all those?

No problem man. Will check the full Kilometer Davis album when I get the chance. I legit think it sounds great so far. I’m a sucker for that simplistic diy indie/emo sound. X-con brings back nostalgia of when I used to listen to crunkcore so it was definitely fun.

Con gets around in the scene lol.

As far as this other issue, I believe it's about intent. Providing a lot of detail in order to raise awareness about a societal issue, personal politics, etc. is one thing. I generally prefer that artists allow interpretation of their art up to the consumer. I've personally had songs that I attached some deep personal meaning to completely ruined when an artist explained their inspiration for the song was contradictory to my own interpretation.

In cases like Scorpion Hill and Limousine I feel like it was the artist's responsibility to capture their feelings and experience in a way that's tangible through the art alone, but I'm probably just a curmudgeon. I also feel like Limousine is so much more effective in this way they are barely comparable. I'm not really a BN fan at all btw.

TBH I thought it resonated more strongly before I heard the backstory. Scorpion Hill rules confirmed.

Exactly, it at least changes the meaning of the song in a way that someone who may know 100% of the record may not ever get the chance to hear. Like someone who just stumbles upon this at a record store, and isn't as invested in the band itself. Context is interesting but its not part of the art.

But yeah the bangers on this album are all so good! It seems like they went for ear-worms this time around, and to anyone that says the band lost their edge all I have to say is "Full Blown Meltdown."

The opener definitely works for me, plus See You At Your Funeral, Bloody Mary, and Bare Hands have all been making the rounds in my playlists.

Closure blows that's for sure, Scorpion Hill definitely works for me musically, song's got a pretty insane build, and the guitar in the "DOWN n OUT I BEEN ON THE ROCKS" is sublime, Bloody Mary's pretty basic and silly but gets a bunch of catchiness points from me
