I've got a phone recording of like 4/5s of the track. Will uploaded it somewhere if I remember.

Yup, it just keeps getting better. Can't understand the hate for Borderlands and Why? Those are my top two from this

Yeah this is one of Devin’s top albums

Hate for Why? That doesn't make any sense. SOTY so far.
Don't see this anywhere near his top albums though. Listened to Terria and this one back to back two weeks ago or so, and Terria is just so much more impactful, organized, and it feels more honest (although I know that Devin poured his heart into this one, but it doesn't show as much for me).
There's a track by track series on Inside Out's YouTube channel where he talks about this things. Very interesting, regardless of your opinion of this album.

I've always felt his old stuff was far more emotionally honest which is what made it better, however beginning to think it's all equally honest but his life is simply too comfortable now for his music to reflect anything particularly cathartic or relatable. Or maybe I'm just too young to relate to 'midlife crisis metal'.

the older music sounds more raw but devin is just about the most honest and wonderful guy there is.

Yeah, I think it's got to do with what kind of emotion he expresses. Early 00s Devin had that "I think, I guess, I know, I think, I know, fuck off" feeling to it, it expressed some inner conflict and a man on a journey. He's gotten older and it seems he has settled down somewhat, and of course it's good that he did. He's more chill than ever and one of the most adorable persons in music today.
A lot of his music these days - especially on Epicloud and Sky Blue - is about realizing how important certain people are to him, that life and the time he shares with those people is not forever, thankfulness, etc, which are great themes, but it's just not as ... tense. Not as captivating. Reminds me of the new American Football album in contrast to the debut, because it's the same kind of themes in there (albeit a completely different style of music).

in order to fully understand and appreciate this album you need to listen to all of the "empath" documentary episodes on youtube as well as devin's track by track breakdown. it brings coherence to the album.

That should not be a requirement for enjoying an album.

True, the album is great even without his thoughts

His thoughts made me respect the direction he chose a lot more, but that doesn't really have an effect on how much I like listening to it. It's not like his words improve the song-writing.

He's been saying a lot in interviews that he's trying to get back in touch with the more emotional side of his creative process and really engage with it. He's been saying he's been too busy theorising about his process for the last ten years to really be part of it.
I think Empath is, in part, an explosion of emotion. I doubt we'll get angry-sad Dev to the same extent again, but I think we'll start to get more music that's more 'him".

@PyramidNoise i would like to hear the 'Why?' accoustic version

"I've always felt his old stuff was far more emotionally honest which is what made it better"
It's more likely that the emotions that Devin was being honest about on his older stuff was more recognizable and relatable, which is why it FEELS more honest. Devy is never not honest. This is who he is, just like SYL's city was who he was back then.
