Great review man! Your review convinced me to check out Badflower even though it's not typically my style, but this sounds even more up my alley, so I'm excited to check it out.

Lucas makes this band for me. I really dig the giant atmospheric sound they have, but he's definitely the secret sauce that makes it work, imo. I'm generally not a fan of lyrics about failed relationships which is something this band spends a lot of time on, but I think their lyrics are pretty inoffensive as far as the topic is concerned.

@dmathias: Hope you enjoy this too!
@Durrzo: Yeah, I'm a total sucker for those lyrics if nobody could already tell, but they do it very well.

The faux emotionalism of the clean vocals and the over dramatic angsty lyricism basically ruin this for me.

that, and the fan base

I'll give this a shot bucko. Not sold on the first track but I'll see how it develops from there

@Mars: Hell yeah, hmu with your thoughts at the end. That and "To Fall Asleep" are the weakest numbers here in my personal opinion.

The vocals do indeed bug me at times but it's not entirely the guy's fault, the singing is so much higher in the mix that the instruments are drowned out. Basically the band is subservient to the vox performance, so you either love em or hate em.

Yeah, that's probably the one thing keeping this from a 5 on my end

Yeah, so far I really enjoy the atmosphere (obviously) and the clean vocals (surprisingly), but the faux-screams/yells aren’t completely selling me quite yet. Marigold caught me off guard though, it was surprisingly poignant and pretty lovely.

This album is completely carried by the vocals, the instruments don't do a damn thing on their own tbh. The atmosphere is pretty cool but this really needed more oomph from the rest of the band.

@Mars: Yeah there's a feeling of completeness that Lucas adds, but I think they have the ability to make it work instrumentally.

I'm just not hearing that. I hear this Austin fellow loud and clear but I don't find him strong enough to carry this all on his back. In fairness, not many vocalists can take on that kind of task.

@Mars: Understandable. He hasn't quite hit my favorite singers list (which I still need to update at some point) but Lucas (not Austin, lol) has some great vocals imho.

@Slex: Thank you so much! I've got a full writeup for the new American Football just waiting for the release, and I'll be working on it even more and maybe doing another quick write-up like my 1/5 for Warpaint in the meantime.
Also, I hope you enjoy this!

Yeah I'm having a hard time tryin to decide if I wanna tackle that AF release or not, a lot of big releases that day

@Slex: I already know I'm doing it. The meat of the review is already 100% there, I just need to work on proofreading it and making it more concise. And I'm thinking I might do a write-up on something that I don't already love to death between now and then. Thinking there's been way too many 4.5's coming from me lately, haha.
