my man there are so many sexists out there. either you're extremely lucky with the quality of people you surround yourself with or you are not looking hard enough

I'm not from NA or old enough to say what blade's cultural impact was like but I doubt it was as much of a cultural phenomenon. and i agree, moonlight is a much better movie with a much deeper and nuanced look at issues, but it can't really be compared, as an artsy 'deep' movie, to a summer blockbuster, because it would never capture that mass audience appeal which drives popular culture

Sinternet: as a person who has quite a few female friends, and whose gf was raped by an ex, I can tell you I deeply empathize with anyone who suffers at the hands of a drunken dick, but I would also say it's something I see a lot more on TV than in real life. I'm not oblivious to it happening on the daily, but I don't think those small minority of psychopaths should be representative of the whole.

"The debate is pretty focused on the review, I dont think any of the people who took issue with it have heard the album."
good point pots, lol. I'll admit I only skimmed through all the comments
Blade is such a nostalgic film for me. Obligatory comment on how amazing I thought Stephen Dorff's acting was in the new season of True Detective

That's the thing though, how do you discern? I mean maybe someone makes a really unfunny sexist joke, doesn't make them sexist. Actual legitimate sexists are sociopaths and of course there are a lot of them but I would still say they're a minority

i know you're talking to sint but 1) i'm very sorry to hear that and 2) i don't think anyone is arguing for shit men to be representative of good men, it's just that there is a concerning and scary number of men that are, in fact, shit. there are bad people of all persuasions (obviously, i don't know why i feel the need to clarify this) but gender inequality is very real and disproportionately affects women

@ Atari agreed x10000

I don't think it's as disproportionate as you make it seem, given the statistics on education, jobs, etc., But fair enough. I'm glad we could have a civil discussion about it, but I maintain that some of the things you said came across as provocative and I think you lay it on a little thick.

i feel like that group is much larger than you think.(and this thing isn't just restricted to attacks on women aswell, there are obviosuly gay men who will do the same to other guys). it can sometimes be difficult to understand this perspective because as you know, decent people, we wouldn't want to be associated with the kind of person who does that, but as someone who goes out pretty regularly during the summer back at home with my female friends, once a week at least usually, on average i'd say that in a group of 5-6 one of them gets groped or felt up every other time. and taht's not including guys trying to test the water of compatibility by attempting lecherous things, but actual groping. and to many of them it's just a normal part of going out as a woman, which is honestly the worst part about it, many of them expect it to happening. in fact my best friend used to say that she would never go out without me being there because if there was no guy in the group they would just be opening themselves up to this kinda conduct even more, whicch again is frightening

i'm laying it on thick because it is the central theme of the album

"I'm not oblivious to it happening on the daily, but I don't think those small minority of psychopaths should be representative of the whole."
im not adding input to the discussion on the review, i just want to point out: it shouldnt be representative of the whole, but i have a lot of female friends too, and an unsettling number of them have been sexually assaulted at some point in their lives. witnessing women get harassed/bothered/touched by creepers at bars is pretty common too, unfortunately. it's not just "sociopaths" and "psychopaths" doing these things.

women being touched in ways they don't conscent too is a way too familiar thing that happens around here, too. Latinamerica got a serious issue with violence against women, actually.

i'm a bit iffy on the whole "microaggression" concept myself: while i get trauma can accumulate, i think like "emotional labour" it's a co-opted term that either describes benign, non-gendered transgressions or, like, genuine aggressions that should in no universe be bestowed with a micro prefix (i've got a micro prefix 4 ya pal). and let's all ruminate on the socialist angle. mm. that's the good discourse.
i think my predominant concern though is after listening to the album I err on the side of Arcade and think that any feminist-focused concerns are explored through a structural lens, while others are more self-effacing and slyly subversive - undercutting a certain kind of reactionary twitter bait 'n' click more than anything. i mean w/e great review great album structural misogyny exists yehaw but i think our interpretations differ whatever this shit's boring who cares

it's weird how this discussion hasn't gone off the rails yet..
feels like i'm in the twilight zone

also let it be known that i am 100% more open to discourse/the distinction between benign/offensive generalizations than the fourth-wave shit i seem to have been associated with because of this review

I think he mistakenly said Atari is Arcade

im dumb sorry, although if i was either of those people i'd be stoked by the mix-up!!!! just throwing my two cents out but in this instance consider it a tip for good service, was very satisfied, made me think about my own position,
