@Source: I don't hear the "awful" in his cleans, at worst he's iffy. He's never grated on my ears. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Yea it’s not that he grates on the ears. His cleans I think are fine at best, and I may even grow to appreciate them if they had something decent to say but everything that comes out is just juvenile. I’ve heard much much worse but there’s just nothing truly good about this as a whole.

I have a morbid curiosity for Battles and Sirens now haha

I'm a lot kinder than most, but I gotta agree with Hawks. If this is a 2 for you those won't even be 2's. But i do like "Like Sand" quite a bit.

Does this album sound awful to anyone else? I don't mean musically, I mean it sounds like the album audio is coming through a toilet paper roll. Pretty sure the singles/leaks sounded a lot better than this. Maybe I got a bad Youtube link.

Regarding the cleans... autotune. Lots and lots of autotune. I'm listening to Call My Name right now and the thought of Anders trying to do this song live is cracking me up. No way in hell.

I’m very kind too haha. You just gotta listen to the bad every once in a while to appreciate the good.

I have a CD rip of the album and it doesn't sound like that at all. sounds the same as the singles.

which is still to say that it's typical overprocessed, compressed mainstream rock production, which is to be expected from Chris Lord-Alge. seriously, look at his discography.

production =/= mixing. the mixing ultimately has the biggest impact on how an album sounds along with mastering.

Lol @ Follow Me. Come on Anders, how can you have Howard Benson himself pumping entire barrels of industrial-grade autotune into your voice and STILL fuck up a song that hard?

Hm, I didn't even know Alge was involved with this honestly.

God am I just deaf or something because I can't hear much autotune if any on Anders' voice.

I mean, a large amount of what you listen to most definitely uses a lot of autotune as a production trick, so you probably just don't even notice it at this point.

@Hell: Yeah that might be it. Although i still notice it in places. Panic's "Nails for Breakfast, Tacks for Snacks", the first two Attack Attack albums, the last 30STM album, literally any T-Pain song I've heard, etc.

Listen to any album from Reroute to Siren Charms, then listen to this or Battles. Anders' cleans were weak, whiny, warbling trash before they hired Benson to process the shit out of them. Hell, just listen to The Chosen Pessimist. You're telling me that guy turned 43 or whatever, cut off his dreadlocks and magically learned how to sing like Jared Leto?

'We Will Remember' is one of the worst songs they've ever done. Maybe the worst. This is a step below Battles so far.

I've heard every In Flames album, and "The Chosen Pessimist" has some of my favorite vocals from Anders to date. If I remember right, he's been training with a vocal coach lately too.

Also, hard disagree. We Will Remember was a MASSIVE step up from (This Is Our) House imho.

that's because (at least in the case of Attack Attack! and T-Pain, I haven't heard the others) the autotune there is very blatant and intentional and done for effect. autotune is used on virtually every modern album to some extent. there's nothing inherently wrong with it, it's generally used to simply smooth out a mistake here or there instead of doing endless retakes.

and then there's when a vocalist is just bad (or attempting to sing in a range/style that's not suited to his voice, IE Anders) that it's applied generously to smooth out everything. it's not as blatant as the intentional use of autotune that most people associate with it, so they probably figure most people won't notice.
