i was ready to buy into the hype, especially after the opening track, but beyond that i’m not seeing what everyone else is.
i hope it grows on me and i can’t say i didn’t enjoy it, but i can say the vocals are so breathy that my ears were damp by the time the album ended (and may i say what a pitifully abrupt ending it is)

There were a few flashes during my initial listen but this is the kind of album I can't brute force my way into it clicking.

I've listened to this a few times now, and I just can't get this to strike a chord with me. It's the same problem I found Typhoon to have. I enjoy the music, it's very good in fact, but it refuses to stay in my head. I do quite like "As Above, So Alone" though.

Yeah I think that’s totally fair and might be the reason I enjoy Strange Flowers - That bridge is constantly stuck in my head. I don’t think many individual songs stay in my head, but the overall mood and tone of the music does. For me, the atmosphere it creates is as important as any one song.

it's like you're actively searching for things to dislike huh

I just don't really see any grounds to dismiss the ending of this album. if anything it's perfect for the dream concept. and pitiful seems like a deliberately provocative/scathing choice of words to me

don't get me wrong I'm surprised we lasted this long without some antihype

i’ll concede that’s the wrong word, wasn’t my intention. it did disappoint me, though, if it’s supposed to be this jolt out of a dream it doesn’t come across that way to me.
if it’s anti hype you’re after, let me tell you my thoughts on the astronoid

Closer on here is extremely lame, I love and hate this at the same time. Definitely requires a high tolerance for cheesiness

This was quite an entrancing experience. I'm not sure I've fully processed it on two listens but I really enjoy/appreciate it.
Pope may have been too good of a single to start with, not that the rest isn't at the same level but Pope feels more similar to YAMS. Lay Here and Colorless to the end were the other highlights, especially Waltz on Water. That one really got to me.

And I LOVE Pope

i dont think theres enough musicianship or substance for a full album. it would have been fitting to do an EP, or wait for more material to build. the bass lines and orchestrals are recycled from ixora.
no...calling this a 5.0 is highway robbery. Certainly there are times of such aesthetic brilliance that only aaron marsh can pull off. But there is a lack of musicianship and the compositions are rather predictable and stagnant too often. this is a 3.5 in my book. As an EP it could get a 4.

Can't say I agree, salah. I feel like every song has it's own distinct identity, and a good variety of different soundscapes and instruments. Piano, violins, a silky smooth saxophone section, both real drums & programmed beats, acoustic and electric guitars...lots of variety. Love this thing. Strong 4, maybe 4.5 over time. The icy cold aura reels me in.

When the anti-hype is a 3 that's when you know an album is really good

What songs would you say sounds like they were recycled from Ixora? I would say this and Ixora have just as much in common as YAMS and Ixora - Enough to clearly be a Copeland album, but that’s about it. There are so many risks taken here that they haven’t taken fully before as a band.

This has elements of nearly every Copeland record while still having its own identity. It sounds a bit like Ixora and YAMS and ESR (props to Row for mentioning Last Time He Saw Dory as well, a top 3 Copeland song for me) all drenched in a dreamy, electronic haze. I've said it before but I'll say it again, one of the best artistic progressions I've ever heard.
