Yep, this is still some total Wonderbread shit.

"I'd say there's a lot of average indie that gets average scores on this site. it's fucking rare now for anything to stay over a 3.9"
When actually comparing new releases to the classic albums released in the 60's, 70's, and 90's, there really hasn't been a truly classic album with enough appeal to be rated more than like a 4.2 released in like a solid decade for me. Not to sound like a vintage bitch, but if an album really deserved a high average it would get it.
I get wanting to rate an album 5/5 cuz it's new and feels like a breath of fresh air compared to other releases in the past year, but when scoring things you have to look at the whole scope of contemporary releases. imo.

@nolerthebowler eh I can see that, but I just rate something based on how much I enjoy it. I don't hand out 5s for lightly, but if it feels like a perfect album, then might as well rate it as such. I don't need to look at an album within the entire scope of music, I just have to love it that much. That's my 2 cents anyway.

I agree with both of you, actually. I was discussing this with a mate that holds Switchfoot's the Beautiful Letdown as a 5 for basically the same reason Abbey Road is a classic. I do think if we're going to make those kinds of claims (that something is revolutionary or massively influencial) we need to compare to scope of music as a whole and what really was regarded as game-changing.
On the other hand, albums like this aren't going to be shaping thr musical landscape for the following few years but it's a perfect listen front to back for me and already holds a lot of personal significance.

"Pope" is still one of the best tracks of the year
|
| |
"to outright hate it is baffling to me"
it's too laughably sappy to hate

Album Rating: 4.5
Pope is easily in my top 3 songs of the year

find myself returning to that one often

Lay Here is so fucking good. I for real have a new favorite track every time I listen to this.

Album Rating: 5.0
1. Strange Flower
2. Suddenly
3. Pope
4. Night Figures
I'm constantly confused as to why Night Figures is normally one of the bottom songs on people's rankings.

Album Rating: 4.5
I like it but it's not one of the best (the competition is pretty cutthroat here to be fair). Also totally forgot about Strange Flower dammit

Album Rating: 5.0
Night Figures is probably in the middle/lower tier for me but only because my top 4 are incredible 5/5 tracks and every single other song here rules too. It's like a 4.3/5 track for me on an album where every song blows me away just a tad more.

Night Figures is phenomenal agreed. It's so hard to say what my favorites are, probably:
1. Lay Here
2. Night Figures
3. On Your Worst Day
4. Strange Flower

I guess it is hard to forget that in so many people's rankings, bottom doesn't mean "dislike". Guess that's the sign of great album! I think Night Figures was the single that showed me this would be something really, really special, so it has a special place for me.

yeah worst song on this album is 4/5 at worst.

I'd say the worst song is It Felt So Real but even that's a 5/5 spoken track

Discovered this album on a beautiful morning, gave it like 5 spins and immediately loved it. Later that day my gf broke up with me and haven’t had the courage to give this another go since then. It’s been over a month and a half now and I’ve listened to it for the first time since then. It’s still so gorgeous but it’s hurts like hell.
