The more I listen, the less I like it. I hope it's a cyclical thing.

Still enjoying this, I remember thinking they could make something excellent one day after hearing their EP when it released, seems that day has come.

Why do people always bring up Deafheaven? Deafheaven didn't make this sound. Alcest did. Deafheaven just completely and totally ripped them off. Use Alcest for the comparison. Deafheaven are shameless thieves and deserve no credit for anything except for making blackgaze boring somehow.

They're pretty good, like a mix of Devin Townsend, Alcest, and Coheed & Cambria.

Deafheaven made blackgaze commercially accessible. Alcest is a niche band, so is Deafheaven but Deafheaven appeals to a broader audience. Also, Deafheaven hasn't released a bad album. I can't say the same about Alcest.

Alcest has never released even an average album they’re all amazing, last Deafheaven album is one of the worst pieces of trash ever.

Roads to Judah was a carbon copy of Alcest with some emo thrown in. Sunbather bored me to tears. The one after was ok. The newest was boring.
Alcest is absolutely as big as Deafheaven. Deafheaven most definitely doesn't appeal to a bigger audience. When I saw Deafheaven live the crowd was puny. When I saw Alcest live the crowd was much bigger, but Alcest played with Enslaved so I'm sure people were there for them whereas Deafheaven played with Diiv and that was a soporific show for certainty.
Also the only Alcest album I wasn't THAT huge on was Shelter. The others are all in my favorites, absolutely stunning band. Les Voyages de L'ame is magical.

I am sorry that I found Ordinary Corrupt Human Love to be the AOTY last year. I stand by what I say. Alcest has one meh album and that is Shelter, the rest of their discography is 4 or above. I don't find it edgy nor cool nor do I give a flying fuck what someone else thinks. You don't like the new Deafheaven album, cool, go listen to some obscure shit only 5 people have heard if that is your thing. I don't fucking care.

Kodama and Ecailles are both flawless and the others aren’t far behind. Sunbather is one of my fav albums ever and I honestly love everything between both bands except Deafheaven’s latest atrocity.

Yeah I made that post while listening to Tyler the Creator, don't care about obscurity at all. Alcest has just under 100k monthly listens on Spotify, Deafheaven has just over 110k. Trying to pretend like Alcest is some obscure band compared to the monolith that is Deafheaven is crazy. They're the same level of popular. The difference is one of them (Alcest) was an incredibly original band that created an entire style of music. The other just ripped them off.

Alcest essentially invented Blackgaze, it is hard for a blackgaze band to not release a carbon copy of one of their albums. Look at half of the blackgaze bands... I also wouldn't call Astronoid blackgaze.
