"but ok back to pots' take about this album--is there anything in particular that makes it derivative trash, rather than just derivative? are there other *modern* US-based rappers that have done this kind of style before, and done better (ie not trash, just derivative)?"
well if they were done early enough in the timeline they wouldn't have to be derivative would they? everyone i said is modern, dr yen, chester, shahmen, cult fav are all u.s. i believe
i dont know on what planet this is maximalist, it's the most simplistic sampling ever. just one super sloppy slowed down pitch dropped sample with super rudimentary percussion per track. i'm tryna highlight some things a little more sophisticated while maintaining that kind of stretched out lofi swampy production, sometimes with much less focus on percussion. But instrumentally, if you want to exclusively focus on the most similar beats out there, just search literally any beatmaker of the last 5 years on spotify and just browse through the thousands of similar artist pages. none of which are particularly notable. that shit is boooring.

yeah true i guess, the production is a bit sharp / abrasive too, so its gets a little semantic when categorizing it as minimal, especially with what that term is usually used for outside of hip-hop
that yen lo album is like all around minimal tho, highly recommend that for a unique little experience

i think there is an easier argument to make about Earl being a charismatic / unique MCee than there is for this type of production being innovative or profound this late in the game. But it's hard for me to even measure that on this one because I really think these beats are dime-a-dozen and that distracts me.

Earl's delivery on this is simultaneously hazy/detached and energetic. I think it's an interesting mix. Feels like he has a lot to say on this one but it still has that "I don't really give a fuck" Earlness to it

Yeah i mean i've felt that on previous stuff, so maybe he hasn't lost that edge on this one, just hard for me to focus on when i find the production side of things to be very lackluster when it was still a fresh approach for IDLS,IDGO's time IMO

I think especially that production contrast between IDLS,IDGO and this puts a sour taste in my mouth because paired with his charisma on the former, for that time it was like "damn bro you really on top of this" but then this came out 3 years later and it was just the same thing but phoned in and less fresh and I just felt like I expected him to stay on top a bit more and push foreward instead of just... settling

The simplicity of the beats doesn’t mean they’re bad though, yeah a lot of them sound like little more than chopped up samples with gross beat, but to do much more than that would just detract from Earl’s performance, also the songs are only like a minute and a half each so the simplicity in beat structure doesn’t really result in them being boring

well i think i've elaborated pretty extensively on why they are boring to me and how simple beats aren't always boring anyways.
i'm just overexposed to beat music and there isn't enough going on here to separate it from the flock for me
