I actually vastly prefer it to Argento's. The thing with the original Suspiria for me is that it's all just about the set-pieces and pallets. The soundtrack is iconic but the mixing is so outdated and suffocating that it's distracting and you can't tell what sounds are being heard by the characters and which are part of the soundtrack. The general premise is interesting enough but the depth is super limited and the acting and dialogue is so disjointed it's barely coherent. The mother of sighs herself was a gross abomination as well which made her an underwhelming villain.

I feel this way about Argento in general, his set-pieces and aesthetic were iconic and game-changing but his story-telling and directorial skills are often disappointing.

The new one took his strengths and amplified them while taking his weaknesses and inverting them

IMO

Yea the acting and dialogue/dubbing almost ruined the original for me, and the plot was very thin but fine for what the movie was. The visuals/direction and atmosphere are definitely the strengths, but I very much prefer the remake. It’s pretty much a completely different movie so I’d go in with that in mind.

I find a lot of people feel that way and are just hesitant to say it due to his cult status haha.

Regardless, his aesthetics truly were incredible. The under-water sequence in Inferno will forever be engraved in my mind in particular.

Mother of Tears however, good god what a way to bastardize the trilogy.

Yeah I pretty much wanted to turn back around and go back in as soon as I left. Making plans to go see it a second time.

There's a lot to gush about when it comes to particulars but I'm trying really hard to contain myself and not get spoilery :[

"I feel this way about Argento in general"

Rewatch Deep Red. That is one of my favorite mysteries and has some of my favorite characters in horror. It's more than just style.

And yeah, the original Suspiria is just one of the most, if not the most beautiful horror films of all time. I get the style over substance complaint, but I just don't care when it comes to that movie. The combination of the cinematography, creative death scenes, colors, music, etc just hits me in a way that many other films don't. I look at it more like an experimentation on film rather than a conventional movie. It feels like a genuine, purposefully unorganized nightmare ala Lynch. Glad to hear the new one is more arthouse, though.

And the dubbing is just part of the galileo horror that adds to the unusual charm imo. It's just apart of the genre for that time.

The original Suspiria is probably my favorite horror film of all time. This is an interesting and creative soundtrack, although I can't help but wish Thom would've tried his hand at the classic Goblin theme.
I agree with the complaints about the sound-quality and dubbing of the original - however, at least to an extent, I feel like those quirks add to the film's charm and mystique. There's not a thing about it that I would change. Very curious to watch the remake when I get the chance, though.

yeah I’m happy this turned out to be an appreciation thread more than anything. the more I think about it the more I love it. funny too because the showing I went to by the end of it half the theatre had walked out lol

@pots yessss hereditary was one of the better movies I’ve seen at the cinema this year, and it wasn’t even really a ‘horror’ movie either per se

@Lucca I should specify that I mean of the Dario films that I've seen, which is just the Mothers trilogy.

Also fair defences all around. Some my criticisms are only valid now that several decades have passed since the movie came out. If you compare Suspiria to most other horror-fare of its time some of them don't apply.

Hereditary falls apart in the final act imo. It takes a turn for the ridiculous in a way that does a disservice to its extremely solid cerebral exposition. Still a very good movie, but I found much of the final 20 minutes to be jarring in a campy, even goofy sort of way.

The ending was indeed jarring and borderline campy and it took me a while to decide what to make of it but I kind of settled on liking it in the end tbh

Yeah I get that, it was just for me surprisingly unambiguous given the rest of the film which is what made it feel strange for me. But again I dug it once I let it sink in.
