It’s a shadow of the cultural force that it was, doesn’t mean there’s no good bands

Sure that's fair. We can agree on that! I do feel that calling something dead or near dead is a bit extremist and hyperbolic though.

Metalcore isn't near dead wtf its probably the most commercially viable form of metal around atm (unfortunately). Its here to stay

Oh yeah, it's still alive and well. The quality, on the other hand, can be argued. Fit for a King, Oh, Sleeper, and old Underoath do it well in my opinion but I can't think of many other metalcore bands that really stand out to me.

That said after jamming EWS again, that is the better record by quite a long shot. That one was a straight 5 for me and even today I'd still hand it a 4.6 to 4.7. One of my fav metalcore releases in years. The only song on that that resembles anything on here is "Orphan" and I think that might surpass everything on here, save maybe "Depths 3."

People keep saying the cleans and the rapping (oh dear god) are “not [that] bad”. So does that mean they are good? Or are y’all avoiding the fact that they are average or almost bad? I’m guessing they’re “really not so great”, but there might be other redeeming qualities (probably not the lyrics, knowing Silent Planet) across the LP. My opinion, but that still shouldn’t equate anything 4+, might even be a dealbreaker for a few people. Looks like the average is starting to show signs of leveling out.

jpaul I'd say that the rapping and cleans are not "bad". Instead I'd say they're very polarising aspects of the record.

"The rapping" is getting this connotation that it's somehow nu-metal or limp bizkit like. The rapping is much more stylistically nuanced and similar to traditional hardcore vocals than the connotation implies. Realistically I think the average listener will associate those sections with a faster and more rhythmic shouting than outright rapping. I just see "the rapping" as another facet to their sound that helps with variation. For me "the rapping" section on Northern Fires is one of my favourite moments on the record.

The cleans are divisive because tonally the vocalist is generic and high pitched. Some people love his sound and that's why it's so prevalent in the scene in general. I'm not a big fan of how he sounds but what sets him apart from the averages of the genre is the quality of the vocal melodies. I find the hooks really enjoyable but could easily see listeners nope-the-fuck-out based on his voice alone.

“For me ‘the rapping’ section on Northern Flies is one of my favorite moments on the record” [2]

Easily, that part has always just stood out for me every listen

I really don't see how ANYONE with ears can find the generic, high pitched whiney Risecore vocals pleasant to listen to...

Silent Planet were cool because of cool choruses and spoken word parts besides that, they are pretty average.

While new album doesnt have it at all and instead, they are using tons of usless cleans, plastic production, avarage riffs.

dang, I agree with the useless cleans, but I thought the riffs were some of their best yet and the production is full and top notch

Yeah just not feeling the dollar store riffs and lyrics for edgy 13 year olds. And those cleans are abysmal.

Metalcore is alive and well. Not hugely commercial =/= dead

One of the best albums, if not THE best album of the year is a metalcore release

yeah hard pass on this, no thanks

I liked one of their songs I heard previously that was mostly kind of post-rock but I'm not feeling the metalcore stuff on this at all

Time Will Die and Love Will Bury It?

FWIW I'm really not feeling the hype train on this one, listening through for the first time right now, and the fact that it pretty much completely passed me by until 'In Absence' hit tells it all IMO.

Like it's not bad so to say and that's some good stuff going on, but as a whole it's just eh.

I see the appeal but indeed don't really get how this could be an AOTY contender

Yeah, Time is the one. Rolo Tomassi absolutely killed it.

The genre as a whole has had an amazing showing this year. Claiming otherwise feels pretty ignorant to me.
