there so many unexpected good albums this year. The top is clearly Night Verses, Rolo Tomassi and Daughters, don't know in which order. After that there's VOLA, Greyhaven, Vein, Beach House and more. Damn. I also need time to check out mewithoutyou and Cursive more properly. Holy shit, this year.

very underwhelmed by this release, but I suppose it might grow on me. Inmazes was bloody fantastic.

This is definitely an evolution of their sound. The thing is, with the overall softening of said sound, the lyrics come front and center- and they're ESL as fuck. It's harder to swallow than Inmazes was.

English as Second Language.
I honestly don't care about lyrics though, so I love this album pretty much the same way I love Destrage's albums although I hear the lyrics are bad.

Alright, thank you. I am also ESL and not knowing what ESL is, proved that again.
btw: Inmazes just arrived today in my post box. There was a sticker on it with the following text: "Imagine the classic Pink Floyd sound mixed with Rammstein and a touch of Meshuggah"

No worries, technically I'm ESL too, but I stopped telling people that so noone has to know. ;]
That's a great description of this band. The Pink Floyd is definitely more pronounced in this one.

Oh god yeah Destrage lyrics are so cringe worthy. Thankfully their music is really good.

Tbh I found that 90% of my truly cringeworthy moments in lyrics are from native English bands. Big names like Dream Theater, Disturbed and Shinedown have no idea how to write a proper lyric it seems (insert joke that they have no idea how to write proper music either). In contrast I feel that most ESL bands try to compensate by making sure to put all their vocabulary into their lyrics. There are always exceptions though.

Coming to think of it, I don't know any song I find cringeworthy in particular. I detest humming, sing-a-longs "oh oooooh wooohh" shit and everything that is not a real word way more cuz it shows me, that the vocalist has nothing else to say and is just cheap.

"In contrast I feel that most ESL bands try to compensate by making sure to put all their vocabulary into their lyrics."
Yeah, a lot of bands in India do this. They replace random words with the fanciest thesaurus synonyms they can think of but synonyms aren't always exact and the songs end up being random gibberish.

It's clear that VOLA understands the meaning of the words, they just end up wielding them clumsily. As per usual, your mileage may vary. I'm a stickler for this shit in the first place. When you have so much sharp metal lyricism at your disposal, it's hard to stomach bands that struggle with it.
