Voivod's main issue here imo is that the main writer is not an original band member, because that makes it more difficult to appreciate the album as a historical 'Voivod' effort. I can relate, although I also think this is better than any outside writer could have ever done for a Voivod album. Embrace the Dan :-)

The only factor of (subjective) merit assessment is the music itself, and I think that Dan had a relatively hard time coming up with a whole Voivod record purely on his own, as Piggy routinely did. I think that by instinct alone, he will do better next time, but historically and for the most part, great albums are the outcome of an (not always peaceful) osmosis between existing band members.
What I didn't like right from the start is the orchestral parts, the rushed structure of some of the proggier songs, and that flow of songs somehow is not smooth, meaning I'm always having a hard time spinning the album from start to finish. In the concert yesterday, the orchestral parts were played with metal instrumentation and sounded a lot better, at least from where I'm standing. Also there was an effort in encompassing 35 years of music into one album, which imho didn't not fully work.
The current incarnation of the band is not the first in which a significant portion of the initial line-up is absent. This happened also in the Eric Forrester era where trademark vocalist Snake departed, and come to think of it, a virtual learning curve connects the style experimentations in Negatron, that were fully culminated in Phobos. Here's to hoping that we will see something analogous with the successor of The Wake.

Voivod giving his expert assessment, respect bro.
'Subjective' is the key word here. I don't think Dan has any problem concocting a Voivod album of himself. 'Sonic Mycelium' is where it gets a bit annoying for my taste in this case. 'Spherical Perspective' and 'Always Moving' are so mindboggling though, they make the whole into a genuine extension ànd expression of Piggy-era Voivod imo.

Great album. Can't wait to hear them tonight. Is Revocation headlining or Voivod though?

^Not at all.
'Iconspiracy' is about as close to that brand of metal as this album gets, so check that song first.

Mongrain was also on From Wisdom to Hate, so I think it’s clear that despite him utilizing similar techniques across the board he’s able to make it work in a variety of different styles. Great guitarist all around
