I'm glad that they're playing in often skipped cities (for DEG at least) like Denver and Cleveland, but at the same time, I feel bad about Canada being skipped. IIRC, the Canada show on the 2015 tour went down well w/fans and the band.

They're doing a show in London which I'm still toying with going to.

@Acme I'd definitely sooner see Mr. Bungle than DEG at this point, unless DEG are playing a set from their best records with good sound quality in which case I might reconsider.
@BigPleb I probably won't, but I guess you could look at what the shows just before are like. If they've actually fixed their sound issues it might be worthwhile.

@Irony FWIW I bought tickets to both Mr. Bungle and DEG (Pig Destroyer as well). If anything as long as I stand in the balcony this time around instead of making the mistake of being in the pit and getting perpetually shoved by middle school/high school DEG fangirls the entire show (and therefore can’t even remember most of the band’s set that night), my experience will at least be a tad better than last time.

@Acme I wouldn't expect many middle schoolers to be attending shows of a band in their 40s, at least not unaccompanied. Fans' ability to be insufferable doesn't stop at adulthood, though.
Pig Destroyer should be a blast. Have you ever seen them before?

That was a gross exaggeration on my part, Irony. I’m sure most of the fans were aged anywhere between a high schooler to early 30s but my god those fans definitely screamed and behaved like middle schoolers lol. Also, the fact that their screaming was louder than the actual band at my vantage point wasn’t fun either lol.
Haven’t seen Pig Destroyer yet actually. I came close to seeing them last year but had to miss it due to work related reasons.

I'd love to see Pig Destroyer; if they play The Cavalry live I would hard nut.

@Acme That makes a lot more sense. Can't imagine any actual middle schoolers being into DEG, but immature morons, definitely.
@Calc That would be embarrassing at a crowded venue. Put a condom on beforehand just in case.

(Edit: Oops, misread) DEG fans are mostly in their 20s or so, in my experience. A lot of teenies, too, mostly those who listen to literally anything Japanese which is kinda annoying, but oh well.

The youngest Dir fan I know is 17, the vast majority of them are early 20/mid 30's from the experiences I've had with the Dir community over the years.

I started listening to them at about 17, so that makes sense.
@Rik I'm guessing they don't listen to literally anything Japanese. Are they down with Japanese zeuhl music? There's a surprising amount of Magma fandom there.

My first experience with Dir was when I was shown Vinushka when I was 14.

I've known some of their stuff (like Obscure) for years and years before I finally decided to delve deep. Feels weird that that's only, like, 4 or 3 years ago now. They've become such a constant in my music taste (and those of some of my friends and family members).

Yeah, that was not meant to be taken word-by-word, but there's a certain image of Japanese rock that has a very unselective fan base in the west. Basically, whatever you can imagine as an anime opening does the trick.

@ Rik, I was 18/19 when I first listened to DEG so I kinda feel like I was a late bloomer to DEG. Personally, I think it’s kinda a bummer that most DEG fans sans those I’ve met here don’t give the impression that they listen to anything outside of Japanese music.

I first got into them when I was 19-20, when a friend of mine who put up with my visual kei phase recommended, and lent me, Uroboros. I’ve never been the same since.

It's so weird that a style of dress is considered a sort of musical genre. DEG and even their shitty imitators sound pretty much nothing like X Japan, Loudness, and the other bands who defined that style of Japanese glam rock back in the 1980s.
|
| |
Yeah...it's a scene, not a genre. Irritates me when people get that wrong.

Never considered visual kei a genre either. I honestly think it’s a really lazy umbrella title for bands that dress similar to X Japan, DEG, and the like regardless of what genre of rock/metal they play.
