the fact that this band is so close to being something that is my shit honestly makes me hate them more than I should. This and Cult Leader' A Patient Man were my first exposures to post metal and they really scared me away from the genre

I think it’s a you problem tbh
Although I will say A Patient Man drags quite a bit but this nails it imo

The thing is I really should love this album. I love metal that explores jazz, and the atmosphere here is sick, but when this band slows down they crash into a fucking wall. I think all 3 members are fantastic musicians, but when they improvise they are ass numbingly tedious to me.

I don't think A Patient Man scared you away from post-metal haha. It scared you away from something but that's not really a pm album.

The longer songs on A Patient Man remind me a lot of post metal, or maybe it's more doom metal. Still, I think the big reason A Patient Man and this bothered me when I first heard them is because when I listened to them I was just starting to get into metal, but all of the metal albums I enjoyed were old, so I was worried that every modern non-mainstream metal album sounded like this.

I think you underestimated just how much music is made up every day lol, it definitely does not all sound like this

Oh I know that now, but at 18 I had zero clue what the modern metal scene looked like

"I've been feeling this a lot lately, specially ever since he trashed on Wavering Radiant which is one of my favorite post-metal albums."

I can’t tell if I really like Sumac or I just really want to like them. The Neil Young meets Zorn free improv guitar noodling stuff really has to find me in the right mood for it to hit, which is a shame, cause where they focus on the riffs and grooves I really enjoy their dynamic.
