Nostalgia maybe. Just dropped the rating though: Assimilate came up as part of my “pressing shuffle” list and it all went downhill from there.

I know right?? I remember at least genuinely being interested in this after the colossal absence of SOAD material over so many years, but once the glossy eyed sheen of fanboy interest washes away it’s just so bland...

I’m also still pissed ‘Angry Guru’ outright steals the ‘Nuguns’ solo.

I had to raise to 3.5. Mostly I was just in a good mood but I still think the first half of the album deserves it.

Serj is now gonna release his own SOAD songs for a solo EP. All the members seem to be working on solo stuff but just refuse to compromise for an actual SOAD album. It might be due to egos but also each one of them comes from a different background: Serj is more into experimental stuff and world music, Daron is the one who likes metal riffs, John prefers classic and alternative rock (especially if you look at his cover album) while Shavo's a hip-hop dude who has an unreleased rap album with RZA. The different influences were always gonna come to a head eventually, especially with none of them willing to compromise. It's not like Deftones where the conflict in different styles of the main songwriters (Chino and Stephen) actually drive their creativity.

I think their first two LPs were lightning in a bottle, I'll be surprised if they ever record together again and honestly I'm fine with that.

The guitar tone on this is so bad! It sounds like something P!nk would use in one of her "heavy" songs. I can't believe the dude from SOAD whatever his name is said that he using influences from black and death metal to make this...lolwut...

The opener is pretty painful, sounds like a hand-me-down SOAD song with lines that Serj would have sung much better

Daron cannot sing for long periods of time. SOB is evidence of that.
