I get it...but believe me brother...you 1ing this, either you clearly don't know what bad music is, or you don't listen to poor music at all...1 music is music people don't bother to rate at all...its all a matter of criteria...you want fill up your 1's section and that's deceiving at start.

plus this site has a quality definition to each number which should make that middle stretch, like nothing is quite a "classic" and nothing is quite "very poor". To 1 this you must be really upset at it...which makes it more emotional than anything objective...

I think Deafheaven have always been highly derivative and cliche band despite being a somewhat original combination of post-rock and bm (following in Lantlos and Alcest footsteps). This is different in that it is one of the albums they have made that reaches the terrible and "offensive" category for me.

"1 music is music people don't bother to rate at all" + ".you want fill up your 1's section and that's deceiving at start."

Can you elaborate on both of these points. I have no clue what you meant by either.

"nothing is quite "very poor".

Are you honest saying this? Also you say nothing is quite classic and very poor. Yet you give a ridiculous amount of albums a 5 but few 1.5s.

"which makes it more emotional than anything objective".

You cant separate emotion from reason.

"You cant separate emotion from reason." agreed. Yet you're still searching for that objectivity factor. I think this answers to all the rest. For the looks of it, you listen to music to feel superior to it and not to be impressed, or subdued to, which is the my main point of art in general...to learn how to love. In fact in your observation you said they have "somewhat original combination of post-rock and bm" but still a 1.

"1 music is music people don't bother to rate at all" I have listened to a lot of poor and very poor music which I don't bother to listen to the full albums only to make a shitty opinion against all the fans of it, but I'm probably wrong here and your ratings are only contributing to the general AVG, otherwise all rates would be substantially higher...

"Yet you give a ridiculous amount of albums a 5 but few 1.5s." Because I love to praise what I love instead of remarking what I hate. This ain't a job man.

You used the word "derivative" and that's it for me....I hate that word and its depreciate meaning, when you know all art is hardly an original...its continuation of what comes behind.

“The outtake is probably the worst thing they have done.”

I don’t think Black Brick is an outtake. It was way too far off from this album’s sound. It was probably some one-off they randomly wrote, or it may even be a b-side from New Bermuda era. To me, the latter makes the most sense. I thought I’d liked New Bermuda. Was obsessed with it when it first came out, but must’ve had my hype goggles on because it’s just a meh album

"I have listened to a lot of poor and very poor music which I don't bother to listen to the full albums only to make a shitty opinion against all the fans of it"

That is where we differ then. I rate almost everything I listen to.

"Because I love to praise what I love instead of remarking what I hate."

That is fine. I just assumed you rate most of what you listen to, my bad.

"when you know all art is hardly an original...its continuation of what comes behind."

True but there are artists who are more derivative than others. Or artists who make no attempts to sound more than a clone of more than two bands at a time. Also a band doesn't have to be groundbreaking in order to escape my loose category of "derivative". You are right, I misuse the word yes.

"somewhat original combination of post-rock and bm" but still a 1."

I was talking about their early albums. Also its not like I dont have taste, I can still dislike/ think the execution isn't very good for unique albums. I gave Roads to Judah a 2.5 for example.

"agreed. Yet you're still searching for that objectivity factor".

Not sure what you think objectivity means or what you think I think it means.

This is what objectivity means to me -

-not listening to only one genre

-not listening to only one decade

-revisit albums after a period of time in hopes of a new perspective

Doing this builds understanding of music and self awareness of your own preferences. This is ultimately still subjective but it takes you closer to the ideal. It is for this reason that I dont see anything wrong with occasionally seeking out bad music. (Though its not like i'm enthusiastic about picking a known bad album of my wishlist)

sorry for the blog

i gave this a 1 because the album is like someone is using a cheese grater inside my ears/on my brain. i find it completely irritating and offputting. the first song is one of the worst songs i've ever heard in my life. being unlistenable to me makes this an easy 1.

Agreed about the first song. More, one of the worst of the decade. But yeah it hurts.

Ghandi...it's obvious you listen to a lot of music...I don't know where I'll be after your amount of ratings...I just make sure that my rates are things I bother to listen in full and learn about their context (and yap I forced myself to like somethings, which were the more rewarding ones)...I can't conceive a life with your amount of low ratings in terms of time spent&having fun with it, but maybe this is your job or life's work.

^nothing wrong with any of that. And yeah I'm obsessed, probably OCD or something.

"and yap I forced myself to like somethings, which were the most rewarding ones"

This is exactly my point about objectivity. Taste is based in exposure, so more of it will take you closer to a true self .

2 years ago, country music would spur an emotional rejection in me. It would make me cringe based on irrational preconceptions.

And a 2.5 is enjoyable for me in the majority of cases. Its just the few albums like Deafheavens debut that are given a higher rating than normal. All from recognition for their influence.

hihihi we're reaching to the point where your 1 is almost equivalent to my 3. I think like, this is good music, cool genre, good instrumentation from a great band...the album falls short in relation the others, not exactly gonna relisten more than I 've just did - 3. gud. bie

maybe someday I'll rate down to 1 some of my rates too lol but for now I prefer to stop my rate at the highest point I got (even though I don't listen to the genre or the album anymore) plus influenced by what that music made to me back then or to the world in general...
