As someone who's gravitated toward all kinds of other music the past few years (despite still loving metal), this is the exact progression I wanted from them. There's so much detail and interesting places this album goes without relying on recycled thrash riffs and things like that on New Bermuda. The best parts of that album were easily the lighter sections for me, and that's what they do best imo.

I think Sunbather was the perfect example of blending beauty with brutality and creating a “dream like” atmosphere. This just doesn’t do any of that for me.

“In short, Deafheaven aren't good at making even remotely interesting black metal and have always been geared towards lackluster indie from the very beginning. HOW SURPRISING”

I literally never said anything like that but what’s the purpose of rehashing something that’s been kinda done to death when they have the talent and finesse to do their own thing better?

Because they can't do either of those genres well and are generally found lacking when compared to many other bands and projects.

"Glint is neat."

everyone keeps saying so, but both times I've listened to the track I've gotten about six minutes in, looked at the time left, and gotten exhausted at the idea of sitting through it for another four minutes. There are good parts but nothing that makes me go "ooo please don't end!"

Man, the shrieked black metal vocals halfway through the first song are goofy as fuck.

They aren't tasteful, and he always sounds like he's trying to be hyperbolic with them.

Would have worked much better just to have spoken or group vocals.

This could've used even less shrieking and bm elements, but I know it's a core part of their sound. Hopefully they'll keep phasing it out with each future release and get more weird and indie sounding. Some fans will hate that haha but it seems like a logical evolution given how this turned out.
