Review Summary: It's the Year of the Snitch. Thank you Mr. Grips
Year of the Snitch may be Death Grips weirdest album yet. And when your entire discography is composed of an angry black man yelling over distorded industrial beats, how much weirder can it get? This weird. The singles were not that good whit the expection of Black Paint, which I think is the best song on the album. It has this really blasting beat and Rides echoing vocals. It has some of that same punk energy from Bottomless Pit. And it features fricking Justin Chancellor! He is not the only guest on this album, later on the album in Dilemma we get Shrek director Andrew Adamson. This shows Death Grips are aware of the meme culture as well. Very cool!
The intro track of this album Death Grips is Online refers to a 'meme' on twitter by Death Grips themeselves. How many rap artists you know that are referring to their own cultural creations? I think not many. Flies, the second track on this album is little too predictable, but the breakdown is really cool and the ending as well.
Linda's in Custody is one of the weirdest Death Grips songs ever, featuring those weird computer voices, reminds me of something Kid A era Radiohead would do if they were making hip hop. The ending is one of the softest Death Grips moments ever. The Horn Section is one of these weird little instrumental bits this album offers. Hahaha is my second favourite single out of this album, very weird track with eerie melody and some record scratching, which is pretty generic whit some boring guitar melodies.
***show wont be out of place on Bottomless Pit. The most energetic track on this album. Streaky is the most disappointing moment on this album, like Eh expect that it's not that good. It sounds little better on the album, but still a big letdown for me. Dilemma, whit their beloved Shrek director is a little moody track. A nice one I think, but nothing special.
Little Richard. Oh, Little Richard, this song is nuts. Another weird song, whit somewhat singed vocals, are they even MC Ride's? The Fear features some piano samples, which is quite extraordinary for a Death Grips song, and for a moment you may think this is yet another generic song, which it quite sadly is for the most part. Disappointed the album whit Death Grips returning to their traditional style. A strong song, and man those screams that were featured on the tracklist video. They are freaking insane. A strong album, but not in their top 3 in my opinion. Still good to hear something new from one of my favourite bands.
