This is Seether's second real album (I don't consider Disclaimer II a full album, because it was the same thing as the first with 8 extra songs. Disclaimer was released in 2002 and Disclaimer II in 2004. Seether then released this album in 2005 and are planning on releasing an acoustic live album July 11, 2006, with songs from both Disclaimer II and Karma and Effect.
Seether is:
Shaun Morgan - Vocals, Guitar
Dale Stewart - Bass, Vocals
John Humphrey - Drums
Patrick Callahan- Guitar
(Patrick departed the band after this record, taking Seether back to a three piece band, which is what it started out as.)
Seether-Karma & Effect (2005)
1. Because of Me - This song starts out with a typical Seether sound, but the whole song is totally different. It is probably about a girl and how she lost her guy. Most of the time throughout the CD, Seether will use two guitars to make it sound better and to get the stereo effect. One of the harder songs on the album. 4.5/5
2. Remedy - The first single off of Karma & Effect. If this song wasn't overplayed as much as it is, I might listen to it a little more. Talks about how he says he can do all of this, but when he can't, he goes back to the remedy. This is probably the only song that doesn't have the two-guitar type effect to it. Another good song, but overplayed. 5/5(I didn't give it 5/5 because my screen name has Seether in it. I bought the CD the day it came out and liked remedy before it became a huge success.
3. Truth - this is about him trying to tell the truth, and can't because he is trying to keep his real reasons hidden. This is the second single off of Karma & Effect. Has a good and catchy guitar line. He also talks about how he has failed us all. This is another rocker. One of the ones I enjoy more than Remedy. 5/5
4. The Gift - The third and final single off of Karma & Effect. It is more laid back than the first two. Has a catchy opening riff to it with no distortion. It is talking about the double life he is living and trying to be better, but he is afraid of the gift we are giving him. It is also the longest song on the album at 5:34. 3.5/5
5. Burrito - A weird name for a track, but he is talking about how the worst is over and how he is trying to get back on the right path. There isn't anything too special about this song as far as music goes. I think it is more of a filler track. Just Shaun screaming most of the time. 2/5
6. Given - The only song on the album tuned below a typical Seether/Disturbed tuning (DbAbDbGbBbEb). It is tuned to drop B and I thought that Seether did a better job on this song. It has a little solo around the 2:40 mark. I think it is talking about the typical "Indian giver" that each one of us is, or has become over the period of our life. 4.5/5
7. Never Leave - My personal favorite off of Karma & Effect. It talks about how a girl denies him and that he keeps on wanting her, but she will not give it to him. That is what I think. This song also uses the two guitars really well, and also good bass. The bridge is one of the better ones on the CD. Blends in well with the song. 5/5
8. World Falls Away - This is the song you want to rock out to. Starts out with a bang on the A chord and then jumps down to the Eb chord that Seether uses so well. Lyrics are typical mainstream lyrics. Nonetheless you should still just rock out to this song, just because it kicks. 4/5
9. Tongue - Talks about how he can't believe in himself and how he wants us to deal with his problems. Tuned to Drop D instead of their normal tuning, this is another song that rocks hard when it comes to the chorus. One of the better songs on the CD. 4.5/5
10. I'm the One - Another hard rock sounding song, talks about how he wants to get some, but she wouldn't let him. I only play guitar to the song, because the guitar work is decently good. Other than that it is nothing good. 2/5
11. Simplest Mistake - This is also one of my favorites on the CD. It starts out with a Drum beat that gets the song going. It uses the two-guitar setup very well on this CD.
"It feels like I'm losing again
When I've lost everything
I'm sure I will see more clearly
Lose what I'm feeling to them
And not feeling anything
I'm sure I will bleed sincerely
Tonight!?" This is the chorus to the song, and saying he is going to lose it all and then blames it on us for his death (which is in the bridge). This is another song to rock out to. 5/5
12. Diseased - This at first sounded like it could be a song from Tool, because of the delay and soft guitar sounds. Talks about how he has decided wherever he is, that he is Diseased and Ungrateful. First part Shaun screams during palm muted guitar riffs to the drums, which for this song is very hard. 4/5
13. Plastic Man - These guys sure know how to write an acoustic song. This is the only one on the CD, but they put it in the right spot. It talks about he will someday find where he fits in with the Crowd. The bridge is very good, as it changes keys, and then breaks back. It is the longest track at 8:47, but Shaun only sings for about four minutes. Then it is silence that leads into the (hidden track). 5/5
14. untitled track - since I don't know Shaun's native language, I am not going to review this track.
Pros - One of the better Mainstream rock bands out there
Shaun's singing
Dual guitar effects
Sound quality
Talents of musicians
Cons - not very many guitar solos (especially from a band who could write them)
Gets repetitive after a few listens.
Talents of musicians
I hope you like this review. It is definitely better than Disclaimer II and Disclaimer. If you have the $10-$15, go out and buy this, you won?t be disappointed. I also put the pros and cons for talents and musicians, because they are great artists, but I definitely think that they laid back and can do a whole lot more if they tried.
4/5 for this album.
