I'm anticipating the serpentwithfeet album coming out Friday, another album by a gay person that deals heavily with spirituality. It's a fascinating topic for me because LGBT culture can be nihilistic: the rejection of (often conservative) religious upbringing becomes a lack of interest in spiritual centering. Reclaiming that drive is a topic that's barely addressed in queer art.
I actually find Julien Baker quite lacking in this category because she doesn't explore the complexity of being a queer Christian in her music. Maybe my expectation is unfair; she stated earlier this year that "I just want to be an artist. I don't want to be the queer Christian artist." The decision to leave it implicit has led to music that resonates with her fanbase, but I'm left wanting more.

I think it's completely fair for her to not want to explicitly dive into that side, but I do wonder like yourself how she balances the two.

Sufjan Stevens? Has he ever divulged his sexuality because a lot of his material seems to struggle with spirituality and I just don't know, he seems to be very open in his work...except in that regard unless I've missed something. It feels almost implied a lot of the time to me :/

There's a Facebook page called "Is this Sufjan Stevens song gay or just about God?" It's been a running joke for a while now, I assume he doesn't want to publicly identify because it places him in a box, similar to Baker.

I've respect either way, if an artist wants to let their art talk and try and keep from being pigeonholed to too great a degree I get it.
If an artist wants to try and start a discussion and become a flag bearer for something for people then I get that too - as long as the art holds up and the message/discussion doesn't outgrow the music to too obvious a degree (cough, Camp Cope, cough cough cough)

enjoyed this a decent amount, loved the spoken word bits as well. Sunday's Cool was probably my favorite although the end of Vines was brilliant as well. thought it was a bit too meandering and off-beat/messy at times but definitely see the appeal. you're also a fantastic lyricist so keep that up man! Frost comes to mind as a favorite in that regard

thank you so much man! i fully understand the meandering critique and I appreciate the kind words

I'm gonna be real with you, I'd never visited this site before Lucid dropped his review and Ramon messaged me on Facebook about it. I'm glad it seems to be attracting such nice company though

Updated the 'fun facts' thing again, hopefully you people who liked it find it interesting

We have all been well behaved.
The album should hit the Sput 2018 chart imminently - average score has come down a bit, I thought Sowing had an adoring flock of drone raters but either he doesn't or they've deserted him on this particular 4.5 rating :/

Frowning at your 3.5 rating right now

Hitting the top sput charts does sound nice - I'm afraid that the RYM score has gone down somewhat but I'm still incredibly grateful for all the kind things people have said, especially Lucid's original review

Anything approaching 3.5 on RYM is mighty impressive, some people dish out a thousand 0.5-1 ratings a year there.
People state an album is one of the best they've ever heard and award it a 2 out of 5. Strange place.
|
| |
you make a good point. I saw someone with like 10,000 ratings and 7000 of them were 2/5. It's odd.

@TimothyCharles I haven't really been around all that much lately, is this your group? If so, great job.
