The chorus for Dark Of You is so cringeworthy it hurts to listen to

This really isn’t even that bad, the production just makes it nearly it nearly unlistenable

yeah I do agree that the production is ass. I didn't mind it last album, but here it's actually kinda grating, more so on the heavier songs

I fundamentally disagree with the premise of this review. This album, while it does mostly stay in the pocket of what you could reasonably expect from a BB album, is definitely not them playing it safe, especially in the first half. Song structures and overall harmony choices often deviate from the usual BB on most tracks.

There are way fewer songs on this that do their exact "Heavy alt-metal riff/soft dark-ish verse/huge major chorus/repeat/heavy break/double chorus" formula that was all over Dark Before Dawn, even if most of the songs do still embrace the BB cliches to a certain extent. Psycho is the the clearest example of that. The chorus is typical big major chorus BB fare, but the somewhat unexpected melody writing in the verses, the more involved drumming and shreddy solo do stand out. There's just overall a clear darker and heavier vibe to the whole thing compared to what they usually do, with the technicality of the instrumentals being upped just a tad also. And even when they do their more usual schtick like on Torn in Two, it feels more inspired than lazy to me (these vocal harmonies are delicious).

I'm not even sure I like the album that much more than DBD cause I do like the typical BB formula (and as most have pointed out the production on this doesn't help), but I for sure appreciate how they wanted to shake things up here even if just a little.

I remember for some reason this album didn't work for me at all 5 years ago and I kinda still think it's a weaker BB record but i'm not as jaded about reunion BB as I used to be

MIW kinda took that mantle for me at this point anyway

Agreed with peartnoy... this is more solid than DBD and definitely got a darker vibe than most other BB
