this and Pentakill are my two favorite power metal records of the past few years

I agree with this review. This album is disappointingly safe. A shame, as their previous two records were both great. Let's hope the new Seventh Wonder album will push at least one or two new boundaries.

I mean it's certainly "above average" just for the fact that Tommy is singing on it.

Yeah, I can't put this above a three. Especially considering their peak from The Fourth Legacy to The Black Halo.

If it was Roy, I might have bumped this to a 3.5

"This is another minor complaint I have about the newer Kamelot stuff: I don't think the grimy, distopian future thing works with their sound. I preferred the romantic, allegorical stuff for their lyrics and themes. A little more classic power metal. I'm listening to Fourth Legacy right now and the difference in music as well as themes is huge."
Yeah, for some reason a lot of bands are on that dystopian kick right now. Definitely getting quite old, especially when a lot of bands can't seem to find an interesting new angle on the subject. That whole romantic-meets-gothic feel of Roy Khan's era was what made the band stand out in the first place; they were basically what you would imagine if you wanted to hear power metal in an operahouse setting, sophisticated but also deeply emotional. Roy's voice gave the music such a rich history without having to rely on a visual medium, and the music was like the metal equivalent to the pit orchestra relaying the grand sweeping arrangements that anchored such a powerful voice

I'd say it's a difficult style to do well in music. It works with a band like Fear Factory because they're industrial, so the suit fits. Ayreon is a pretty good example of how power metal can run with a futuristic, dystopian theme and make it work. The albums may be cheesy, but it's something that Arjen absolutely embraces, and the music does benefit from that level of enthusiasm.

Good review dude, I can understand why you would think this as a lackluster release. Kamelot's style isn't something that should be replicated too often, they're albums are quite long as it is and if it's uninteresting, I can imagine it being a slog.
That being said, I've only ever listened to The Black Halo by these guys, would I enjoy this if I haven't checked any of their other more recent albums?

I recommend Epica and Karma next tbh

Yeah, you gotta hear the essential Roy albums, but then go for this as your first Tommy release, you'll likely have a different perspective on it than most people here.

@RunoftheMill: You'd probably enjoy it, but not nearly as much as The Black Halo. If you're looking to take a good dive into their catalog, I'd go with Epica and Karma next, then Silverthorn and Haven, and if you end up REALLY liking Haven, then give this a go. Although EvoHavok's idea to hear this as your first Tommy Karevik album would be interesting.
