I like how Stick had this at a 3 when he posted that comment, and it dropped right back down to 2.5

That might be it, the nostalgia you had may have affected your perception of this. Idk, I didn't really appreciate just how good they were until this dropped.

I can listen to DTGL today and think that it's still a really special album, nostalgia aside. Their sound really stood out from what most bands were doing. I think it holds up amazingly well and is still some of the best stuff to come out in the genre.
This album cuts out all the soundscapes that made them enjoyable in the first place. It's dumbed down in every department, I can't respect any choices they made here.
I don't truly hate this album, but I do hate that Underoath made it.

Sounds like your rating is a bit generous

It might be. Guess it's for the 2 or 3 songs that I somewhat enjoyed.

If they had continued in the same direction, what's the chances I would've latched on and enjoyed the older work as much as I do now? Considering it took the new album for me to finally get it, lol.

I don't understand why you needed to hear their worst album in order to appreciate what's so good about their old stuff.

Because the other ones were too much for him to handle until he heard something a little more introductory, which made it easier for him to approach and appreciate their other works

Exactly, Wonder.
Also... "Worst" not when the entire Dallas era exists. TOCS is debatable but I personally prefer this to that now.

I haven't listened to any of the Dallas era albums from start to finish but from what I've heard they had some pretty good guitar parts during that time

Doesn't fix a soundscape that is insufferable, but it's why I don't have any of those albums below about a 2-2.5

All Dallas albums rule except aod but even that has some cool riffs

Except Dallas ruined those albums for me. His vox blew ass, at least it almost managed to mask their "JAYZUSSS I LUV YUUUU" lyrics back then.
