'It's incredible that they have the standing they do, but are still somehow overlooked in the grand scheme of things.'
yes i think its a strange combination of critical acclaim + public popularity due to a novelty song
most people i know think theyre the 'king of rock n roll' band.
and re the whole america thing, theyre a quintessentially british group in a way that i dont think translated well transatlantically
even tho on the face of it the subjects of paddy's lyrics are very american and other very british groups have made it in america
hmmm now im thinking of xtc and wondering how well they did
(ps i know youre canadian i mean the northern american continent)

I'm not Canadian lmao
with regards to XTC, they fared a bit better solely because they definitely had some minor success but nothing wholly substantial that propelled them to anything more than a cult band. They toured a fair bit until Andy's breakdown, but I think if that didn't happen, they would've eventually broken through. Not in the way REM did (which is funny since REM opened for XTC a few times whenever XTC was in the States) but enough to garner more popularity. They got another surge of popularity, at least with the college crowd, when Dear God got some airplay and from the resulting controversy of the content.
