Good review. It definitely has some good songs, and I will likely buy it in the end as a fan. But the lyrics are sometimes just really whiny, and it feels like it could have been done by a number of bands. Not really what I look for with them.

I was totally down for an album of catchy schmaltz after the first track but then every other track was just pretty boring indie (with some absolute shockers for good measure) and I was let down

I don't think it's that much drastically worse than their other material. they have a lot of middle of the road stuff, even in their early days

I strongly disagree with that statement (theyre a top 5 band for me) but to each his own.

Severed is cool

Uff, this album is mediocre. Last thing I enjoyed from them was "The King Is Dead."

What A Terrible World has some amazing songs.

First track is cool. After that it's all so samey. Nothing I'd actively avoid listening to, it's pleasant, but not memorable at all.

If "Rusalka, Rusalka" was a track into and of itself with some Hazards of Love wizardry for an ending, it would be the best song in their catalog. I enjoy the album in small doses, but the only one I regularly come back to is the one I've mentioned.
