It's basically what you said. His influences are so strong that they sometimes work against him. If I didn't know, in some parts I would say this is Sufjan Stevens himself, and the Bon Iver shadow is also there , long and wide, BUT you can't deny the quality of his work and how good the album sounds.
So yeah, just paraphrasing your thoughts haha, but you were spot on.

Yeah, there really isn't I think. I mean, it is what it is, it's a good album? hell yeah! But he is doing what he knows, and that is what transpires from the artists he worked with, notably Bon Iver.
