from what I know local openers are mainly booked by venues; they allow local bands to sign up and then assign them open up for bands within their genre (though the band I was referring to in the all time low case was a supporting act touring w them).

I think that for me it boils down to quality > gender, though f > m performers when quality is the same to achieve a bit more equality

As far as I'm aware, in Melbourne the bands themselves choose the openers (though I imagine venues do give suggestions at times) -- often venues enforce a "quota", however, forcing performers to have at least one female act. While its well-meaning, I think the idea is fraught; if the main (assumedly male) band/artist aren't friends with any local female musicians, more than likely they're going choose the first that surfaces and push them toward the front of the setlist, out of laziness and for the sake of filling said quota. Ideally, performers would be more thoughtful, but I think there should be some better way of encouraging positive behaviour.

imo it's always possible to book a high quality female musician; just might not be as easy as bookin dudes + the female musician might not be as popular

copy-pasted from one of my posts on page 5 of this thread: as a person who actually lives in melbourne, goes to shows, follows the local music journalism, and has observed/engaged with discussions regarding camp cope in person and online, i can pretty confidently attest to there being generally good reception of camp cope's music here (at the very least, good reception of their first album; not like they're the greatest band of all time, but definitely enuf for people to be enthusiastic about the band). schoonda and blushful would probably tell you the same. i mean, even on this site, the average for the debut album is a 3.7. and its not as if their success has rested on the quality of this new album (which just came out a few days ago); it was largely built up from that first album.

i know your opinion is to the contrary but what i am asserting here is based on factual, empirical observation: a lotta people think camp cope's music is real good, enuf for them to have gotten some pretty good gigs, and if the attendance at their falls set was any indication, probably enuf to get em even better shows in future.

Melbourne is a hellhole and they should focus on not imprisoning the homeless and rounding up aboriginal buskers in the name of tourism agreed

people are going to be more critical about this record than they normally would specifically because a member said something problematic that ruffled feathers.

Yep, sucks because there's a lot to enjoy here. Even if you don't like the style, this isn't really worthy of the hate it's been receiving from some people.

It's painfully average in unbiased honesty.

i can definitely see how people would find this to be average. imo its suited to fairly particular tastes that a lot of people just arent going to have: simultaneous appreciation for rlly straightforward pop/indie songwriting; punk energy, roughness, and simplicity; and emo-level sincerity and dramatics. but without a real interest in those kinds of genres/styles/characteristics, i can see how this would just sound like run-of-the-mill, boring indie pop; in that respect, i think camp cope is v similar to waxahatchee (although i maintain that the two bands dont sound much alike). CC's first album leaves more of an impression regardless of personal taste, i think: "done" and "lost" in particular are such immediately endearing songs--like i think if you have any interest in punk or indie at all, you can hear something incredibly powerful in both of those songs right from when they first come on. this second album doesnt really have any songs like that, although i think with a couple of spins, what makes these new ones great starts to reveal itself.

also why would it not surprise me that you're also in middle school and just using this site to get validated by random twenty-somethings by bragging about your music taste and putting everything in quotes trying to seem superior and getting banned from this site would actually be a tragedy
