I have to say, I'm starting to agree with you guys as well. I'll admit, I haven't even listened to this album in full in quite some time; I haven't even had much of an interest in spinning it again recently because of that same authenticity issue. Shame too, because it was once in my top 5 albums last year. Sprained Ankle, on the other hand, is an album I still love and cherish to this day

While I think Sprained Ankle is slightly better (It definitely feels more intimate), I'm not feeling the way it seems others are. I'm not sure where the authenticity issue is coming from. Is it just from people not liking the new album as much, or is there some news interview or something I missed that sparked this?

I'll be honest here, the other reason this is growing off me is because it's much more of a dull slog to get through imo

That I can understand even if I disagree, I'm just not sure where the "non authentic" stuff is coming from.

What did she play? She's around here in a few months and I'm deciding whether to go or not; seen her both times she's come so far. First time was unbelievable...

Yeah that was my second time after pitchfork I've seen her, Phoebe blew her out of the water imo but I think her songs just work way better live

there is something about how her "maturation" from Sprained Ankle feels almost forced due to her newfound audience. I honestly don't return to this in full nearly as much as SA...but I also saw her live with my good friend last year on tour for this and watched him cry despite it being the first time he's heard of her. I don't think I've been so moved by a show and i've found it hard to recreate that just through studio recordings.

She should take a lesson from Elliott Smith's career. No matter how he changed his sound or gained an audience you never felt that he was writing to meet the listener's expectations. It's always the purest one-to-one intimacy when you listen, and she needs to tap into that bond going forward. While this is a ghastly misstep I think she can rectify it because the talent is there.

Elliott Smith is fantastic...I agree in terms of lyrics he felt much more authentic but I do still hold a special place for an album to tries hard (probably too hard) to be a communal experience for every listener involved...probably an impossible feat but that was the intention nonetheless which I think differs a bit from Elliott's style

Okay, I kinda get what your saying Con. I do agree that I don't come back to this as much as SA, which is just such a personal album to me. When I do come back to this album though, it hits me just like the first time I heard it. Also, based on what luci is saying, sounds like I need to listen to some Elliott Smith at some point.
