'let me write a letter to yoooooou knooooow whooooo - I will sign it Luuuuucifer regrets'

This is not a winning melody for me, sounds incredibly forced, doesn't really scan at all naturally.

Some neat things going on with the production though

its not about the hook, it's about the gorgeous music and all the little nuances and overall atmosphere. i think it's one of their most beautiful songs

It's all about Paddy's desperate delivery of those lines, rather than the lyrical content.

If I actively notice a clunky melody then that can be enough, plus as I said, I see why the 'hymn like' quality becomes more pronounced at the back end of the album it's generally not a quality I get a major boner over - I was forced to sing hymns as a child and I haven't forgiven, nor forgotten.

Anyway, the only song I seriously consider skipping when I listen is 'Wedding March' - the rest all is exactly where it should be, I wouldn't even think of removing 'Michael'. Surprised it's anyone's favourite though.

The vocal brass bit in Wedding March is pretty cringeworthy tbh

I mean, I get Gunman is essentially a self-covers album but he chose some pretty uninspired cuts to put on it

title track is great though

Nostalgia’s hard to the point I can’t actually appreciate Paddy’s go at it

Farmyard Cat would take him for a ride, but everything else ranges from lame Adult Contemporary to solid country

2.9/5

The Gunman is worth the listen, but nothing else really stands out. Farmyard Cat is unintentional comedic gold though.

The worst part of the post-Andromeda albums is the absence of Wendy's breathy backing vox though

lots of character gone just like that and it seriously shows on Gunman
